Planting Conditions and Ideal Location

• Light Requirements: Best in full sun to partial shade. Full sun brings out the deepest crimson-red foliage, but some shade is beneficial in hot or exposed locations to prevent leaf scorch.

• Soil Preferences: Prefers moist, well-drained soils, rich in organic matter. Avoid chalky soils if possible.

• pH Range: Thrives in slightly acidic to neutral soils (pH 5.5–7.0).

• Moisture Needs: Likes consistent moisture—avoid letting the soil dry out completely. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.

• Planting Time: Best planted in spring or autumn to establish roots before temperature extremes.

• Spacing: Allow 3–4 metres from other large shrubs or trees to accommodate eventual size and spread.

• Positioning Tips: Excellent as a specimen tree, in Japanese or courtyard gardens, and near water features where its foliage can be reflected.

• Shelter Needs: Protect from strong winds which can damage delicate leaves.

• Container Growing: Can be grown in large pots with ericaceous compost; perfect for patios and terraces.

Routine Care, Feeding, and Seasonal Maintenance

• Watering:

  • Keep soil evenly moist, especially during dry spells.

  • Container plants require regular watering, particularly in summer.

  • Use rainwater if possible to maintain slightly acidic conditions.

• Feeding: Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring. For container-grown plants, use a liquid feed every 2–4 weeks during the growing season.

• Pruning:

  • Minimal pruning is needed—remove dead, crossing, or damaged branches in late autumn or winter.

  • Avoid heavy pruning, which can spoil the natural shape.

• Mulching: Apply a 5–8 cm layer of compost or bark mulch in spring to conserve moisture and protect roots. Keep mulch away from the trunk.

• Pest and Disease Resistance: Generally resilient, though aphids, scale insects, and verticillium wilt can occasionally occur. Maintain good air circulation and avoid waterlogging.

• Winter Care: Fully hardy in most regions, but young plants in exposed spots may benefit from fleece wrapping in severe frost.

• Weed Control: Keep the root zone weed-free to reduce competition for water and nutrients.

• Foliage: Deep purple-red leaves in spring and summer, turning vivid crimson in autumn for a spectacular display.

• Flowers: Small reddish-purple spring flowers, followed by winged samaras (seed pods).

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
