Planting Conditions and Ideal Location

• Light Requirements: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. Full sun encourages the best variegation, while some shade can protect leaves from scorching in hotter areas.

• Soil Preferences: Adapts well to most soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils, provided they are well-drained.

• pH Range: Prefers neutral to slightly alkaline soils (pH 6.5–7.5).

• Moisture Needs: Appreciates regular moisture, especially during dry periods, but tolerates occasional drought once established. Avoid planting in waterlogged sites.

• Planting Time: Best planted in autumn (when soil is still warm and moist) or early spring before new growth begins.

• Spacing: Allow 6–8 metres between trees to accommodate the broad canopy.

• Positioning Tips: Perfect as a specimen tree in lawns, large gardens, or parkland settings. Its striking cream-edged leaves make it a standout focal point.

• Wind Tolerance: Can withstand exposed positions but young trees benefit from staking until well anchored.

Routine Care, Feeding, and Seasonal Maintenance

• Watering:

  • Water regularly during the first 2–3 years after planting.

  • Mature trees generally cope well with dry spells but benefit from occasional deep watering in prolonged drought.

• Feeding: Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in spring to support strong growth and healthy foliage. Mulch annually with well-rotted compost to improve soil condition.

• Pruning:

  • Minimal pruning required—best done in mid-summer to reduce the risk of sap bleeding.

  • Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches to maintain a healthy structure.

  • Avoid heavy pruning, which can spoil the natural shape.

• Mulching: A 5–8 cm layer of organic mulch around the base conserves moisture, regulates soil temperature, and suppresses weeds—keep mulch away from direct contact with the trunk.

• Pest and Disease Resistance: Generally hardy and robust. May occasionally be affected by aphids, leaf scorch, or tar spot fungus, though these rarely cause serious harm.

• Winter Care: Fully hardy in UK and Irish climates. No winter protection required for established trees.

• Root Considerations: Has a strong root system—avoid planting too close to buildings, walls, or drainage pipes.

Seasonal Interest, Ornamental Value, and Garden Uses

• Foliage: Large, lobed green leaves edged with a striking creamy-white margin. New spring growth is fresh and bright, maturing to a rich green and cream before turning pale yellow in autumn.

• Flowering: Clusters of small yellow-green flowers appear in spring before the leaves, adding early seasonal interest.

• Fruit: Produces winged seeds (samaras) in late summer, which can be left for wildlife or cleared if undesired.

• Ornamental Value: The variegated foliage stands out beautifully against darker-leaved trees and shrubs, adding light and contrast to planting schemes.

• Wildlife Benefits: Flowers provide nectar for early pollinators; seeds may be eaten by birds and small mammals.

• Garden Design Uses:

All standard deliveries will be completed within 5-7 working days via Fastway Couriers, any delay to this delivery time, the customer will be notified by One of our staff.

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.
 

Click & Collect

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
