Acer pseudoplatanus 'Simon-Louis Frères' – Planting & Care Guide

About Acer pseudoplatanus 'Simon-Louis Frères'

Acer pseudoplatanus 'Simon-Louis Frères', commonly known as the Variegated Sycamore, is an attractive deciduous tree grown for its unusual, seasonally changing foliage. New leaves emerge in soft shades of pink and dusky purple during spring before developing irregular green, cream and white markings as they mature. In autumn, the foliage changes to warm shades of gold and bronze.

This cultivar is slower-growing and smaller than the common sycamore, but it can still develop into a substantial tree. It has a broadly spreading crown and may eventually reach approximately 10–15 metres tall, with a spread of around 4–8 metres. Its colourful foliage and elegant form make it an excellent specimen for larger gardens, lawns and parkland planting.

Planting Guide

  • Plant in full sun or partial shade.
  • A position with some shelter from strong winds helps protect the decorative foliage.
  • Prefers fertile, moist but well-drained soil.
  • Suitable for clay, loam, sandy and chalky soils.
  • Tolerates acidic, neutral and alkaline soil conditions.
  • Dig a planting hole approximately twice the width of the root ball.
  • Keep the top of the root ball level with the surrounding soil.
  • Mix compost or well-rotted organic matter with the excavated soil.
  • Backfill carefully, firm gently and water thoroughly.
  • Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base, keeping it away from the trunk.
  • Allow sufficient space for the broad crown and extensive root system to develop.
  • Stake young trees securely when planting in exposed locations.

Care & Maintenance

  • Water regularly during the first two growing seasons.
  • Provide additional water during prolonged dry weather.
  • Established trees generally need little supplementary watering.
  • Feed in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser if growth is weak.
  • Refresh the mulch annually to retain moisture and reduce weed competition.
  • Keep grass and weeds away from the base while the tree establishes.
  • Check tree ties regularly and loosen them as the trunk expands.
  • Remove the supporting stake once the tree is firmly established.
  • Avoid planting too close to buildings, drains, paving or small garden boundaries.
  • Protect young foliage from severe late frosts where practical.

Pruning

Acer 'Simon-Louis Frères' naturally forms an attractive crown and requires very little pruning.

  • Remove dead, damaged or crossing branches when necessary.
  • Prune lightly while the tree is dormant, preferably between late autumn and midwinter.
  • Avoid pruning during late winter or early spring, when maples may bleed sap.
  • Remove any vigorous shoots that develop below the graft union.
  • Cut out completely green, non-variegated shoots to preserve the colourful foliage.
  • Avoid heavy pruning, which may spoil the tree’s natural shape.
  • Always use clean, sharp tools to produce neat cuts.

Common Problems

Acer 'Simon-Louis Frères' is generally robust but may occasionally experience common maple pests and diseases.

  • Aphids may gather on young leaves and shoots.
  • Scale insects and caterpillars may occasionally affect the foliage.
  • Tar spot can create dark marks on leaves but is usually cosmetic.
  • Verticillium wilt and honey fungus may affect stressed or poorly positioned trees.
  • Prolonged waterlogging can cause root problems.
  • Strong winds may damage or scorch the softer variegated foliage.
  • Remove plain green shoots promptly, as they may grow more vigorously than variegated branches.

With its unusual pink spring growth, beautifully variegated summer foliage and warm autumn colour, Acer pseudoplatanus 'Simon-Louis Frères' is an outstanding ornamental tree for larger Irish gardens. Its slow-growing habit and distinctive appearance make it an impressive focal point, while its hardiness and adaptability ensure reliable performance for many years
