Acer rubrum – Planting & Care Guide
About Acer rubrum
Acer rubrum, commonly known as the Red Maple, is a magnificent deciduous ornamental tree renowned for its outstanding autumn colour and elegant form. Fresh green leaves emerge in spring, often accompanied by small clusters of attractive red flowers before the foliage fully develops. During autumn, the leaves transform into brilliant shades of scarlet, crimson, orange and fiery red, creating one of the most spectacular seasonal displays of any tree.
Growing to approximately 12–18 metres tall with a spread of 8–12 metres, Red Maple develops a broadly oval to rounded crown, making it an excellent specimen tree for larger gardens, parks and avenue planting. Its attractive grey bark and red twigs provide additional winter interest.
Planting Guide
- Plant in full sun or partial shade.
- Full sun provides the best autumn colour.
- Prefers fertile, moist but well-drained soil.
- Thrives in slightly acidic to neutral soils.
- Suitable for loam, sandy and clay soils with good drainage.
- Dig a planting hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
- Position the tree with the top of the root ball level with the surrounding soil.
- Backfill with soil enriched with compost or well-rotted organic matter.
- Firm gently and water thoroughly.
- Apply a generous mulch around the base, keeping it away from the trunk.
- Allow 8–12 metres of space for the mature canopy.
Care & Maintenance
Acer rubrum is a hardy and relatively low-maintenance tree.
- Water regularly during the first two growing seasons.
- Once established, water during prolonged dry spells.
- Feed in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser if required.
- Apply fresh organic mulch annually to conserve moisture and improve soil fertility.
- Keep the area around the base free from weeds and grass while the tree establishes.
- Stake young trees in exposed sites until well rooted.
- Avoid prolonged drought and waterlogged conditions.
Pruning
Very little pruning is required.
- Remove dead, damaged or crossing branches during late autumn or early winter.
- Avoid pruning in late winter or early spring, as maples may bleed sap.
- Lightly shape young trees to establish a strong framework.
- Remove any suckers or shoots from below the graft if present.
- Always use clean, sharp pruning tools.
