Planting Conditions and Ideal Location
-
Light Requirements: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. Full sun enhances leaf colour, while partial shade helps protect from excessive summer heat.
-
Soil Preferences: Prefers moist, well-drained, fertile soil. Performs best in loamy soils rich in organic matter.
-
pH Range: Slightly acidic to neutral (pH 5.5–7.0). Avoid alkaline soils to prevent leaf chlorosis.
-
Moisture Needs: Requires consistent moisture, especially during dry periods. Mulching helps maintain soil moisture and cool roots.
-
Planting Time: Plant in spring or early autumn to give roots time to establish before extreme weather.
-
Spacing: Allow 4–6 metres between trees to accommodate its mature spread.
-
Positioning Tips: Excellent as a lawn specimen, street tree, or feature in large gardens and parks.
-
Shelter Needs: Hardy and wind-tolerant, but protection from strong, drying winds helps maintain leaf quality.
Routine Care, Feeding, and Seasonal Maintenance
-
Watering:
-
Water deeply once or twice a week during hot, dry weather.
-
Newly planted trees need more frequent watering until established.
-
-
Feeding: Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring to encourage healthy growth and vibrant foliage.
-
Pruning:
-
Minimal pruning is needed—remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches in late winter or early spring.
-
Maintain a strong central leader for best form.
-
-
Mulching: Add a 5–8 cm layer of organic mulch around the base each spring to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Keep mulch away from the trunk to prevent rot.
-
Pest and Disease Resistance: Generally resistant to serious pests and diseases, though aphids, scale insects, or verticillium wilt may occasionally occur.
-
Winter Care: Fully hardy in the UK and Ireland; young trees benefit from protection in exposed areas until well established.
Ornamental Features, Seasonal Interest, and Garden Uses
-
Foliage: Uniquely, this variety produces deep red leaves in spring, which gradually turn a glossy green in summer before changing to rich orange-red in autumn.
-
Form: Upright, symmetrical habit with a strong central leader and uniform branching.
-
Flowers and Fruit: Small red flowers appear in early spring before the leaves emerge, adding seasonal interest.
-
Growth Rate and Size: Moderate growth, typically reaching 10–12 metres in height with a spread of 5–7 metres at maturity.
-
Wildlife Benefits: Early spring flowers provide nectar for bees and other pollinators.
-
Ornamental Value: Combines three seasons of foliage colour with a tidy, uniform habit—ideal for both formal and informal landscapes.
-
Garden Design Uses:
-
Striking specimen tree for lawns or driveways.
-
Excellent choice for avenue or boulevard planting.
-
Provides vertical structure in mixed borders.
-
-
Seasonal Appeal: Offers distinct seasonal changes—red spring leaves, lush green summer canopy, and fiery autumn colour.
-
Longevity: Long-lived with minimal maintenance when grown in the right conditions.
