Planting and Growing Conditions
Ideal Soil and Location
- Soil Type: Prefers well-draining soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Sandy or loamy soils are ideal.
- Sun Exposure: Thrives in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. Requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal blooming.
- Planting Location: Suitable for garden beds, borders, and containers. Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases.
Watering and Feeding
- Watering: Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings.
- Feeding: Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season. Additional feeding with a water-soluble fertilizer every 2-3 weeks can enhance blooming.
Temperature and Humidity
- Temperature: Prefers moderate temperatures between 15-24°C (60-75°F). Sensitive to frost; protect from cold temperatures and sudden frosts.
- Humidity: Tolerates a range of humidity levels but prefers moderate humidity. Avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal diseases.
Maintenance and Care
Pruning and Deadheading
- Pruning: Lightly prune to maintain shape and encourage bushier growth. Cut back leggy or overgrown stems in early spring.
- Deadheading: Regularly remove spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming and improve the plant's appearance. Pinch off the flowers just above the nearest set of leaves.
Pests and Diseases
- Common Pests: Can be affected by aphids, spider mites, and whiteflies. Use insecticidal soap or neem oil to manage infestations.
- Diseases: Susceptible to powdery mildew, root rot, and fungal leaf spots. Ensure proper spacing, good air circulation, and avoid overhead watering to minimize disease risk.
Winter Care
- In-ground Plants: In USDA zones 9-11, protect from cold snaps with mulch or frost cloth. In cooler climates, treat as an annual or bring indoors.
- Potted Plants: Move containers indoors or to a sheltered location before the first frost. Reduce watering during the dormant period.
Propagation
- Cuttings: The most reliable method. Take 4-6 inch cuttings from healthy, non-flowering stems in late spring or early summer. Remove lower leaves and root in moist potting mix.
- Seeds: Can be grown from seed, although this method is less common. Sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost or directly in the garden after the danger of frost has passed.
- Division: Divide mature plants in early spring to propagate and rejuvenate growth.
