Introduction to Argyranthemum frutescens (Pink)
Argyranthemum frutescens, commonly known as the Marguerite Daisy, is a vibrant and cheerful flowering plant that brings long-lasting colour to any garden. The pink-flowering variety is especially eye-catching, offering soft, romantic blooms with a sunny yellow centre from spring through to autumn. Native to the Canary Islands, this sun-loving subshrub is often treated as a tender perennial or summer bedding plant in cooler climates.
Well-loved for its compact growth, prolific flowering, and versatility in containers or garden beds, Argyranthemum is a favourite for pollinator gardens, coastal settings, and cottage-style landscapes. With a little care and attention, this plant will reward gardeners with a dazzling display of pink blooms for months.

Sheltered positions preferred—protect from strong winds.

Prefers well-drained, fertile soil.

Avoid waterlogged areas to prevent root rot.
-
-
Container Growing:
-
Excellent for pots—use a high-quality multi-purpose compost.
-
Ensure containers have adequate drainage holes.

Mix in slow-release fertiliser at planting for season-long feeding.
-
-
Spacing:
-
Plant 25–30 cm apart in beds or larger pots to allow for healthy air circulation and full shape.
-
-
When to Plant:
-
Best planted out after the last frost, when the risk of cold damage has passed.
-
Maintenance and Ongoing Care
While relatively low-maintenance, Argyranthemum frutescens benefits from regular care to keep it flowering at its best.
-
Watering:
-
Water regularly, especially during hot or dry periods.
-
Allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between watering.
-
Avoid overhead watering to reduce risk of mildew.
-
-
Feeding:
-
Feed every 2–3 weeks during the growing season with a high-potash liquid fertiliser.
-
Regular feeding supports continuous flowering and healthy foliage.
-
-
Deadheading:
-
Remove faded flowers regularly to promote new blooms.
-
Keeps the plant neat and encourages a bushier shape.
-
-
Pruning:
-
Lightly trim stems to maintain compact growth.
-
Pinch back young shoots early in the season to encourage branching.
-
-
Pest and Disease Watch:
-
Generally pest-free but may attract aphids or whitefly—treat with insecticidal soap if necessary.
-
Ensure good airflow to prevent powdery mildew.
-
-
Overwintering:
-
Not frost-hardy—treat as an annual in colder regions.
-
In milder areas, it may overwinter if kept in a frost-free greenhouse or conservatory.
