Planting & Position

• Planting season:

  • Bareroot plants must be planted November to March while dormant.

• Light:

  • Grows in full sun or partial shade.

  • Excellent on exposed sites.

• Soil:

  • Thrives in all well-drained soils — clay, chalk, loam, sand, and poor ground.

  • Tolerates dry, windy, coastal, and exposed conditions.

• Spacing (hedging):

  • Plant 3–5 plants per metre for a dense hedge.

  • Best arrangement: double staggered row (40 cm between rows).

• Best use:

  • Field boundaries

  • Mixed native hedging

  • Wildlife corridors

  • Windbreaks and shelter belts

  • Rural and coastal gardens

Care & Maintenance

• Watering:

  • Water after planting and keep moist in the first season.

  • Once established, very drought tolerant.

• Mulching:

  • Apply mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds during establishment.

• Feeding:

  • Feed with a general-purpose fertiliser in spring (optional).

  • Most sites will not require additional feeding.

• Pruning:

  • Trim in late summer (August/September).

  • Whitethorn thickens beautifully with regular trimming.

  • Can also be cut harder in winter to shape or rejuvenate.

• Hardiness:

  • Exceptionally hardy — withstands frost, wind, exposure, and poor soils.

  • Ideal for challenging sites.

• Spring:

  • Masses of scented white flowers, highly attractive to bees and pollinators.

• Summer:

  • Deep green foliage forming a strong, protective hedge.

• Autumn:

  • Clusters of glossy red haws (berries), excellent for birds and wildlife.

• Winter:

  • Dense, thorny framework offers shelter and remains highly stock-proof.

• Growth rate:

  • Fast: 30–60 cm per year.

• Wildlife value:

  • One of the best native plants for supporting birds, bees, insects, and small mammals.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
