Planting & Position

• Planting season:

  • Bareroot beech must be planted November to March while dormant.

• Light:

  • Thrives in full sun to partial shade.

  • Avoid deep, heavy shade which can reduce density.

• Soil:

  • Prefers well-drained soil — loam, chalk, and light clay are all suitable.

  • Avoid waterlogged or very heavy clay soils.

  • Excellent choice for sloping ground or free-draining sites.

• Spacing (hedging):

  • Plant 30–45 cm apart for a single-row hedge.

  • For extra density, plant a double staggered row 40–45 cm apart.

• Position:

  • Perfect for boundary hedging, screening, formal gardens, and long-lived landscape planting.

Care & Maintenance

• Watering:

  • Water well after planting.

  • Keep soil moist in the first growing season, especially in dry spells.

  • Once established, beech is relatively drought-tolerant.

• Mulching:

  • Apply compost or bark mulch after planting to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

• Feeding:

  • Feed lightly in spring with a general-purpose shrub/hedge fertiliser to encourage new growth.

• Pruning:

  • Trim once per year for a natural look (late summer).

  • For very crisp, formal hedges, trim twice per year (June and August).

  • Beech responds well to pruning and thickens beautifully over time.

• Hardiness:

  • Fully hardy across Ireland and the UK.

  • Retains dry leaves in winter, giving year-round screening.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
