Brassica Curly Leaf Mix – Planting & Care Guide
About Brassica Curly Leaf Mix
Brassica Curly Leaf Mix is an attractive mixture of ornamental Brassicas grown for their bold, colourful and highly textured foliage. Often known as ornamental kale, these compact plants develop beautifully ruffled or curly leaves in a mixture of colours, typically including shades of green, cream, white, pink and purple, depending on the mix.
They are particularly valuable for autumn and winter displays, when many traditional bedding plants have finished flowering. Cooler temperatures help intensify the foliage colours, providing long-lasting interest through the colder months.
Ideal for containers, window boxes, borders and seasonal displays, ornamental Brassicas look especially effective when planted in groups or combined with autumn and winter favourites such as Cyclamen, Heathers and Violas.
Planting Guide
- Plant in full sun to partial shade.
- Choose fertile, well-drained soil or good-quality multipurpose compost.
- Water plants thoroughly before planting.
- Plant at approximately the same depth as they were growing in their pots.
- Firm the soil gently around the roots.
- Water thoroughly after planting.
- For group displays, space plants approximately 20–30cm apart, depending on plant size.
- Avoid permanently waterlogged positions.
Planting in Containers
Curly Leaf Brassicas are particularly well suited to autumn and winter containers.
- Use a container with adequate drainage holes.
- Fill with good-quality multipurpose compost.
- Plant individually or combine several colours for greater impact.
- Water after planting and keep the compost moderately moist.
- Raise containers slightly off the ground if necessary to improve drainage during wet winter weather.
They combine particularly well with Heathers, Cyclamen, Violas, Pansies, Carex, Ivy and other autumn/winter bedding plants.
Care & Maintenance
These plants require relatively little maintenance.
- Water regularly after planting until established.
- Keep container-grown plants watered, particularly during dry or windy weather.
- Avoid allowing plants to sit in water.
- Remove yellow, damaged or deteriorating outer leaves when required.
- Feeding is generally unnecessary for short-term seasonal displays.
- Check periodically for slugs, snails and caterpillars.

Autumn: Plants establish quickly and begin providing strong foliage colour as summer bedding fades.
Winter: Cooler temperatures can enhance the pink, purple, cream and white tones, making ornamental Brassicas especially attractive during the colder months.
Spring: Plants may begin to stretch and eventually flower as temperatures and daylight increase. At this stage, they are normally replaced with spring or summer bedding.
Common Problems
- Slugs and snails can damage foliage.
- Caterpillars may feed on the leaves, particularly during milder weather.
- Aphids can occasionally appear on new growth.
- Waterlogged compost can cause root deterioration.
- Damaged or yellowing outer leaves should be removed to keep displays looking fresh.
- Plants may become taller and lose their compact appearance as temperatures rise in spring.
With their colourful curly foliage and excellent tolerance of cool weather, Brassica Curly Leaf Mix is an ideal choice for brightening autumn and winter gardens. Planted in groups or mixed with other seasonal favourites, these ornamental Brassicas provide bold colour, texture and structure for containers, borders and winter displays
