Planting Brassica ‘Smooth White’
Brassica ‘Smooth White’ is an ornamental cabbage grown for its attractive rosette of broad, smooth leaves. Its creamy-white centre is surrounded by green outer foliage, creating a bold display during autumn and winter. Cold weather usually intensifies the central colouring, making this decorative brassica particularly effective in seasonal containers, window boxes, borders and entrance displays.
- Choose an outdoor position in full sun or light partial shade. Good light helps the plant maintain compact growth and encourages the strongest contrast between its white centre and green outer leaves.
- Plant in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Ornamental brassicas dislike both prolonged drought and waterlogged conditions.
- Prepare the ground by removing weeds, stones and old plant material. Incorporate well-rotted compost if the soil is poor, sandy or particularly quick to dry.
- Dig a hole slightly wider than the root ball and approximately the same depth. Position the plant so that the top of its root ball is level with the surrounding soil.
- Backfill carefully, firm gently around the roots and water thoroughly. Avoid burying the lowest leaves, as contact with damp soil may encourage decay.
- Allow sufficient space between plants for air circulation and rosette development. Crowded plants are more likely to suffer from pests, mildew and damaged outer leaves.
- When planting in a container, use fresh, peat-free multipurpose compost and select a pot with drainage holes. Combine with heathers, cyclamen, violas or evergreen foliage for a contrasting seasonal arrangement.
Watering, Feeding and Seasonal Care
Brassica ‘Smooth White’ needs consistent moisture to maintain fresh foliage, but its roots should never remain in saturated compost. Regular inspection is especially important for plants in containers, which may dry out quickly during bright or windy weather.
- Water thoroughly after planting and continue watering whenever the upper layer of soil begins to feel dry. Direct the water towards the compost rather than into the centre of the rosette.
- Check container displays frequently, even during autumn and winter. Rain may not reach the compost when dense foliage covers the surface.
- Ensure excess water can drain freely. Empty saucers or decorative outer containers after heavy rain to prevent the roots from standing in water.
- Water during the warmer part of the day in freezing weather. Wet foliage and saturated compost are more vulnerable when temperatures fall overnight.
- Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser occasionally if the plant is growing in a container for an extended period. Avoid excessive feeding, which can encourage soft foliage and reduce colour intensity.
- Plants growing in improved garden soil will usually require little additional fertiliser during their relatively short display period.
- Remove weeds carefully from around the plant. A thin layer of organic mulch can help conserve moisture, but keep it away from the lower leaves and central crown.
- Brassica ‘Smooth White’ tolerates cool weather and light frost well. Its colour often becomes brighter as temperatures fall, although severe or prolonged freezing may damage the leaves.
Ongoing Maintenance and Problem Prevention
Ornamental brassicas are commonly grown as temporary seasonal display plants. Routine cleaning and pest inspection will keep the rosette attractive for as long as possible.
- Remove yellow, torn or decaying outer leaves by cutting them cleanly near the base. Prompt removal improves appearance and prevents damaged material from holding moisture around the stem.
- Avoid cutting or damaging the central growing point. The pale inner leaves form the main ornamental feature and will not recover well from severe injury.
- Inspect the undersides of leaves regularly for caterpillars, aphids, whitefly and eggs. Remove small infestations by hand or use an appropriate treatment if necessary.
- Watch for slugs and snails, particularly in damp conditions. They can quickly create irregular holes in the broad, smooth foliage.
- Maintain good spacing and airflow to reduce the risk of mildew and fungal leaf spots. Avoid leaving fallen leaves or other debris beneath the plant.
- A tall, loose or leaning rosette may indicate insufficient light or overly warm conditions. Move container-grown plants to a brighter, cooler outdoor position.
- Rotate containers periodically so all sides receive similar light and the rosette develops evenly.
- Ornamental brassicas are related to edible cabbages, but plants sold specifically for decorative use should not be eaten because their previous treatments may be unknown.
- Replace the plant when the centre begins to elongate, flower or lose its compact colouring, usually as temperatures rise in spring.
- With bright light, steady moisture and regular cleaning, Brassica ‘Smooth White’ will provide crisp colour, bold texture and dependable seasonal interest throughout the colder months
