Positioning and Planting Your Cactus Mix

A cactus mix in a 15 cm ceramic pot brings together several compact plants with contrasting shapes, colours and textures. Cacti are generally easy to maintain, but their long-term health depends on strong light, careful watering and excellent drainage. Individual plants may grow at different rates, so the arrangement can gradually change in appearance.

• Position the pot in a bright location where the plants receive several hours of direct or filtered sunlight each day. A south-facing or west-facing windowsill is often suitable.
• Introduce the cacti to strong direct sunlight gradually. Plants moved suddenly from a shaded shop or indoor position into intense sun may develop pale, yellow or brown scorch marks.
• Rotate the pot by a quarter turn every few weeks. This encourages balanced growth and prevents the plants from leaning noticeably towards the light.
• Keep the arrangement away from cold draughts, frequently opened doors and direct contact with cold window glass during winter.
• Check whether the ceramic pot has a drainage hole. If it does, place it on a saucer and empty away any water that collects after watering.
• If the ceramic container has no drainage hole, water very sparingly. Alternatively, keep the plants in a removable nursery pot inside the ceramic cover and take the inner pot out whenever watering.
• Use specialist cactus and succulent compost if repotting becomes necessary. A free-draining mixture containing horticultural grit, pumice or perlite helps prevent water from remaining around the roots.

Watering and Feeding

Incorrect watering is the most common cause of problems with indoor cacti. These plants store moisture in their stems and are better able to tolerate temporary dryness than constantly wet compost.

• Allow the compost to dry completely, or almost completely, between waterings. Test below the surface rather than relying only on the appearance of the top layer.
• During spring and summer, water thoroughly and allow all excess moisture to drain away. Do not leave the base of the pot standing in water.
• Water less frequently during autumn as growth begins to slow. In winter, many cacti need only occasional moisture, particularly when kept in a cool room.
• Avoid following a rigid watering schedule. Temperature, light levels, airflow, pot drainage and the season all influence how quickly the compost dries.
• Pour water directly onto the compost and avoid allowing it to sit around the crowns or between closely grouped plants. Trapped moisture may encourage rot.
• Use room-temperature water where possible. Very cold water can shock roots, especially when the plants are growing in a warm room.
• Feed once every four to six weeks during spring and summer with a specialist cactus fertiliser diluted according to its instructions.
• Do not feed during winter when growth is limited. Excess fertiliser may lead to weak growth or cause salts to accumulate in the compost.

Ongoing Care and Problem Prevention

A mixed cactus display requires little pruning, although routine inspection will help identify problems before they spread throughout the arrangement.

• Remove dead flowers and completely dried plant material with clean tweezers or small scissors. Wear thick gloves or use folded paper when handling spiny varieties.
• Maintain good airflow around the plants without exposing them to freezing draughts. Avoid placing the pot in a permanently humid bathroom or beside a humidifier.
• Check regularly for mealybugs, scale insects and spider mites. Look closely around spines, stem joints and the base of each plant, where pests can remain hidden.
• Soft, dark or translucent tissue usually indicates excessive moisture or rot. Stop watering immediately and inspect the affected plant and its roots.
• Wrinkling may indicate thirst, but it can also occur when damaged roots are unable to absorb water. Check that the compost is dry and the plant base is firm before watering.
• Repot in spring when the plants become crowded, the compost deteriorates or roots fill the container. Choose a pot only slightly larger than the existing one.
• Different species in the mix may eventually require separation if one plant grows much faster or has different watering needs.
• Keep the display away from children and pets because cactus spines can cause injury. Some decorative arrangements may also include plants that are harmful if eaten.
• With bright light, restrained watering and reliable drainage, the cactus mix can remain attractive for many years while developing its own distinctive character.

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.
