Positioning and Planting Your Cactus Mix
A cactus mix in a 16 cm terracotta pot combines several compact plants with contrasting shapes, colours and textures. Cacti are generally easy to maintain, but their long-term health depends on strong light, careful watering and excellent drainage. Terracotta is particularly suitable because its porous surface allows excess moisture to evaporate more quickly than plastic or glazed ceramic.
-
Position the arrangement in a bright location where the plants receive several hours of direct or strongly filtered sunlight each day.
-
A south-facing or west-facing windowsill is often suitable, although intense summer sunlight through glass may cause scorching.
-
Introduce the cacti to direct sunlight gradually. Plants moved suddenly from a shaded shop or greenhouse may develop pale, yellow or brown patches.
-
Rotate the pot by a quarter turn every few weeks to encourage balanced growth and prevent the plants from leaning towards the light.
-
Keep the arrangement away from cold draughts, frequently opened doors, radiators and direct air-conditioning.
-
Make sure the terracotta pot has an unobstructed drainage hole. Place it on a saucer to protect furniture, but empty collected water promptly.
-
Use specialist cactus and succulent compost if repotting becomes necessary. Adding horticultural grit, pumice or perlite will improve drainage.
-
Avoid burying the stems or crowns beneath the compost because trapped moisture can encourage rot.
-
Handle spiny varieties with thick gloves, folded paper or suitable tools rather than touching them directly.
Watering, Feeding and Seasonal Care
Incorrect watering is the most common cause of problems with indoor cacti. These plants store moisture in their stems and are better able to tolerate temporary dryness than continually wet compost.
-
Allow the compost to dry completely, or almost completely, between waterings.
-
Test below the surface before adding water. The upper compost may feel dry while moisture remains around the roots.
-
During spring and summer, water thoroughly until excess moisture drains from the base.
-
Empty the saucer after watering and never allow the terracotta pot to stand permanently in water.
-
Avoid giving frequent, very small amounts. A complete watering followed by a proper drying period encourages healthier root growth.
-
Reduce watering significantly during autumn and winter when light levels are lower and growth slows.
-
Pour water directly onto the compost rather than over the plants. Moisture trapped around crowns or between closely grouped cacti can cause decay.
-
Remember that terracotta dries more quickly than plastic or glazed ceramic, particularly in warm, sunny rooms.
-
Feed every four to six weeks during spring and summer with a specialist cactus fertiliser diluted according to its instructions.
-
Do not feed during winter. Excess fertiliser may produce weak growth or cause damaging salts to accumulate in the compost.
Ongoing Maintenance and Problem Prevention
Individual cacti within the arrangement may grow at different rates or have slightly different requirements. Regular inspection will help maintain the display and identify problems before they spread.
-
Remove dead flowers and completely dried plant material with clean tweezers or small scissors.
-
Maintain gentle airflow around the arrangement without exposing it to freezing draughts.
-
Avoid placing the pot in a permanently humid bathroom or beside a humidifier.
-
Check regularly for mealybugs, scale insects and spider mites. Inspect around spines, stem joints and the base of each plant.
-
Soft, dark or translucent tissue usually indicates excessive moisture or rot. Stop watering and inspect the affected plant and roots.
-
Wrinkling can indicate thirst, but it may also occur when damaged roots cannot absorb moisture. Check the compost and plant base before watering.
-
Provide additional light if the cacti become pale, elongated or unusually narrow. Move them gradually to prevent sun damage.
-
Repot during spring when roots fill the container, drainage becomes poor or individual plants begin crowding one another.
-
Choose a new terracotta pot only slightly larger than the existing one. An oversized container may retain excessive moisture.
-
Separate vigorous plants if they overwhelm slower-growing specimens or require different watering conditions.
-
Protect the pot from freezing temperatures because absorbed moisture can expand and crack terracotta.
-
Keep the display away from children and pets, as spines can cause injury and some cacti may be harmful if eaten.
-
With abundant light, restrained watering and reliable drainage, this cactus mix will remain compact and attractive while developing its own distinctive character.
