About Carex comans 'Amazon Mist'™

Carex comans 'Amazon Mist'™, commonly known as New Zealand Hair Sedge, is an elegant evergreen ornamental grass valued for its fine, cascading foliage in soft silvery-green tones. Its graceful, flowing habit creates movement and texture, making it an excellent choice for borders, containers and contemporary planting schemes.

Forming a dense, fountain-like clump, 'Amazon Mist'™ grows to approximately 30–40cm tall with a spread of 40–50cm. The fine foliage remains attractive throughout the year, while subtle brown flower spikes appear in late spring to early summer. It is a superb plant for softening hard landscaping and providing year-round interest with minimal maintenance.

Planting Guide

• Plant in full sun or partial shade.
• Prefers fertile, moist but well-drained soil.
• Suitable for loam, sandy and free-draining clay soils.
• Improve heavy soils with compost and horticultural grit before planting.
• Dig a planting hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
• Position the crown level with the surrounding soil.
• Backfill, firm gently and water thoroughly.
• Apply a light mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
• Space plants approximately 40–50cm apart.

Carex 'Amazon Mist'™ is an easy-care ornamental grass.

• Water regularly during the first growing season.
• Once established, water during prolonged dry spells.
• Feed lightly in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser.
• Apply fresh mulch annually to conserve moisture and improve soil fertility.
• Keep the area around the plant free from weeds.
• Water container-grown plants more frequently during warm weather.
• Avoid prolonged waterlogging.

Pruning

Very little pruning is required.

• Remove dead or damaged leaves in late winter or early spring.
• Comb through the foliage by hand or with a rake to remove old leaves.

• Divide mature clumps every 3–5 years in spring to maintain vigour.
• Avoid cutting the plant back hard, as the evergreen foliage provides year-round interest.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
