Carex oshimensis 'Feather Falls'® – Planting & Care Guide

    About Carex oshimensis 'Feather Falls'®

Carex oshimensis 'Feather Falls'®, commonly known as Japanese Sedge 'Feather Falls', is an elegant evergreen ornamental grass admired for its cascading, arching foliage. Each leaf features a rich green centre with broad creamy-white margins, creating a bright, flowing effect that adds year-round texture and colour to the garden.

Growing to approximately 30–40cm tall with a spread of 45–60cm, 'Feather Falls'® forms dense, graceful mounds that are ideal for borders, containers, woodland gardens and ground cover. Its evergreen foliage remains attractive throughout the year, making it one of the finest ornamental sedges for Irish gardens.

    Planting Guide

    • Plant in partial shade or full shade.
    • Will also thrive in full sun if the soil remains consistently moist.
    • Prefers fertile, moist but well-drained soil.
    • Suitable for loam, clay and sandy soils.
    • Improve poor soils with compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting.
    • Dig a planting hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
    • Position the crown level with the surrounding soil.
    • Backfill with soil, firm gently and water thoroughly.
    • Apply a mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
    • Space plants approximately 45–60cm apart.

    Care & Maintenance

Carex 'Feather Falls'® is a low-maintenance plant that performs well with minimal attention.

    • Water regularly during the first growing season.
    • Once established, water during prolonged dry spells.
    • Feed lightly in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser.
    • Apply fresh mulch annually to conserve moisture and improve soil fertility.
    • Remove weeds while plants establish.
    • Water container-grown plants more frequently during warm weather.
    • Avoid prolonged waterlogging.

    Pruning

    Very little pruning is required.

    • Remove dead or damaged leaves in late winter or early spring.
    • Comb through the foliage with your hands or a rake to remove old leaves.
    • Trim untidy foliage lightly if required.
    • Divide mature clumps every 3–5 years in spring to maintain vigour.
    • Avoid cutting the entire plant back, as the evergreen foliage provides year-round interest.
