Chrysanthemum (GM) 'Rock 'n Roll' – Planting & Care Guide

About Chrysanthemum 'Rock 'n Roll'

Chrysanthemum 'Rock 'n Roll' is an attractive garden mum (GM) grown for its abundant late-season flowers and naturally compact, bushy habit. It provides an instant splash of colour at a time when many summer-flowering plants are beginning to fade.

Garden mums are particularly popular for late-summer and autumn displays, producing masses of flowers above dense green foliage. 'Rock 'n Roll' is ideal for patio pots, doorstep displays, window boxes and seasonal borders.

Easy to incorporate into existing autumn planting, it combines particularly well with Violas, ornamental Brassicas, Cyclamen, Heathers and ornamental grasses.

Planting Guide

  • Choose a position in full sun or light partial shade.
  • A sunny position generally encourages the best flowering.
  • Plant in fertile, moist but well-drained soil.
  • Water the plant thoroughly before planting.
  • Dig a hole slightly wider than the root ball.
  • Plant at the same depth as it was growing in its original pot.
  • Firm the soil gently around the roots.
  • Water thoroughly after planting.
  • Avoid permanently wet or waterlogged ground.

A position sheltered from strong winds and prolonged heavy rain can help keep the flowers looking their best.

Planting in Containers

'Rock 'n Roll' is particularly well suited to container displays.

  • Choose a container with adequate drainage holes.
  • Use good-quality multipurpose compost.
  • Plant individually for a simple display or combine with other autumn plants.
  • Water thoroughly after planting.
  • Keep the compost evenly moist during flowering.
  • Never leave the container permanently standing in water.
  • Position in a bright, sunny or lightly shaded location.
  • Deadhead regularly to maintain a neat appearance.

For an attractive autumn arrangement, combine with Viola cornuta, Heathers, Carex, Ivy and ornamental Brassicas.

Care & Maintenance

Chrysanthemums are relatively straightforward to maintain while flowering.

  • Water regularly, particularly when grown in containers.
  • Do not allow the root ball to dry out completely.
  • Avoid excessive watering and waterlogging.
  • Water around the base of the plant rather than continually soaking the flowers.
  • Deadhead faded blooms regularly.
  • Remove yellow or damaged leaves when required.
  • Container plants can be given an occasional liquid flowering-plant feed during active growth.

Pruning

Very little pruning is necessary during the flowering season.

  • Remove faded flowers as they finish.
  • Cut away damaged or unhealthy stems and foliage.
  • Plants can be cut back after flowering has completely finished if they are being retained.

Garden mums are commonly grown primarily for their spectacular seasonal display. Their ability to overwinter outdoors can vary with the plant and growing conditions, particularly where winter soil remains wet.

Seasonal Interest

Late Summer: Dense green foliage supports developing flower buds.

Autumn: Masses of flowers provide the plant's main seasonal display, bringing valuable colour to pots and borders.

Late Autumn: Deadheading and regular watering can help maintain the display as long as weather conditions remain suitable.

Pollinator Value

Chrysanthemum flowers can provide a late-season food source for bees and other pollinating insects during mild weather. Pollinator value varies according to flower form, with more open-centred blooms generally being easier for insects to access.

Common Problems

  • Drying out: Container-grown Chrysanthemums can wilt quickly if allowed to become excessively dry.
  • Waterlogging: Constantly saturated compost can damage the roots.
  • Aphids: May occasionally appear on young shoots and flower buds.
  • Slugs and snails: Can damage foliage near ground level.
  • Grey mould: Can develop during prolonged cool and damp weather.
  • Heavy rain: May spoil open flowers.
  • Poor airflow: Crowded plants can be more susceptible to fungal problems.

With its compact, bushy growth and abundance of late-season flowers, Chrysanthemum 'Rock 'n Roll' is an excellent choice for bringing fresh colour to the garden from late summer into autumn. Perfect for patio pots, seasonal containers, borders and doorstep displays, it provides an easy and effective way to extend the garden's colourful season
