Clematis armandii, sometimes called Evergreen Clematis, is native to China and valued for its early flowering and year-round foliage.
-
Habit: Vigorous, evergreen climber with twining stems.
-
Height & spread: Grows 4–8m tall and 2–3m wide when mature.
-
Foliage: Glossy, leathery, deep green leaves; large and attractive year-round.
-
Flowers: Masses of star-shaped blooms in shades of white to pale pink, depending on the variety.
-
Fragrance: Sweet, almond-like scent that fills the air in spring.
-
Flowering season: March–April, often covering the plant in a dense mass of blooms.
-
Position: Best in full sun for maximum flowers, though tolerates light shade.
-
Soil: Moist but well-drained, fertile soil; thrives in loam, chalk, or sandy ground.
-
Hardiness: Fully hardy in sheltered UK and Irish gardens; protect young plants from very harsh frost.
-
Uses: Ideal for covering fences, walls, trellises, pergolas, and even large garden sheds or garages.
The single cane format makes these plants easy to establish, quickly climbing supports to become spectacular focal points.
Care Guide
Clematis armandii is a fast-growing climber that thrives with the right positioning and a little seasonal care.
Planting
-
When to plant: Best in spring or autumn when the soil is moist and workable.
-
Depth & spacing: Plant with the root ball 5–8cm below soil level to protect stems from clematis wilt.
-
Support: Provide strong supports (trellis, wires, pergola) to accommodate vigorous climbing growth.
-
Tip: Keep roots cool by shading the base with mulch or low groundcover plants.
Watering & Feeding
-
Water deeply during the first year to help establish roots.
-
Once mature, it is drought-tolerant but flowers better with consistent watering in dry spells.
-
Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser, followed by a high-potash feed in early summer to encourage flowering.
Pruning & Maintenance
-
Prune lightly after flowering in late spring to shape and control size.
-
Remove dead or damaged stems but avoid heavy pruning, as it flowers on old wood.
-
Mulch annually with compost or well-rotted manure to enrich soil and retain moisture.
Protection
-
Hardy in most regions but prefers a sheltered, sunny site to protect blooms from frost and cold winds.
-
Evergreen leaves may scorch in very exposed areas; plant against a south- or west-facing wall for best results.
-
Generally pest- and disease-free; may rarely be affected by clematis wilt or aphids.
