Overview & Features

• Clematis ‘Jackmanii’ is one of the most popular and reliable large-flowered climbing clematis.

• Produces rich deep purple to violet blooms with contrasting creamy-yellow stamens.

• Flowers are velvety in texture and measure around 10–12 cm across.

• Blooms profusely from mid to late summer into early autumn.

• Deciduous foliage provides a fresh green backdrop during the growing season.

• Typically grows 3–4 metres in height.

• Ideal for trellis, pergolas, fences, arches, and scrambling through shrubs.

• Attractive to bees and pollinators.

This variety is valued for its intense colour, vigorous growth, and dependable late-season display.

Planting & Positioning

• Plant in full sun or partial shade.

• Flowers best in sunny positions, though roots should be kept cool.

• Prefers fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil.

• Improve soil with compost or well-rotted manure before planting.

• Avoid heavy, waterlogged conditions.

• Dig a hole twice as wide as the rootball and slightly deeper.

• Plant 5–8 cm deeper than it was in the pot to encourage strong root development.

• Angle towards its support structure when planting.

• Provide sturdy support such as trellis, wires, or pergola beams.

Clematis performs best with shaded roots and good airflow.

Watering, Feeding & Flowering

• Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots.

• Keep soil evenly moist during dry spells.

• Once established, plants are moderately drought tolerant.

• Feed in early spring with a balanced fertiliser to promote vigorous growth.

• Apply compost annually to maintain soil fertility.

• Flowering typically begins in mid-summer and continues into early autumn.

• Deadheading is not essential but can tidy the plant.

Consistent moisture during active growth supports abundant flowering.

Pruning, Maintenance & General Care

• Belongs to Pruning Group 3.

• Cut back hard in late winter or early spring to 20–30 cm above ground level.

• Remove weak or damaged stems at the same time.

• Flowers are produced on new season’s growth.

• Tie in new shoots as they develop to guide coverage.

• Mulch annually to conserve moisture and keep roots cool.

• Generally hardy and low maintenance once established.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.
 

Click & Collect

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
