Planting & Positioning

• Clematis ‘Rouge Cardinal’ is a striking large-flowered climber producing rich velvety red blooms from mid to late summer.

• Ideal for growing up trellis, fences, pergolas, arches, or through shrubs and climbing roses.

• Best planted in full sun or light partial shade.

• Keep the roots cool and shaded while allowing the top growth to reach sunlight.

• Prefers fertile, moist but well-drained soil enriched with organic matter.

• Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and slightly deeper than the pot.

• Plant with the crown set 5–8 cm below soil level to encourage strong new shoots and help protect against clematis wilt.

• Backfill with compost-enriched soil, firm gently, and water thoroughly.

• Apply a mulch around the base to retain moisture and shade the roots.

• Provide support from the start to help young stems establish and climb.

This variety is well suited to adding bold colour to vertical spaces in the garden.

Watering, Feeding & Flowering

• Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a strong root system.

• Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.

• During dry spells, water deeply to ensure moisture reaches the roots.

• Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser.

• Apply a high-potash fertiliser in early summer to promote abundant flowering.

• Avoid excessive nitrogen-rich feeds, which may produce foliage at the expense of flowers.

• Container-grown plants require more frequent watering and feeding.

• Flowers appear from mid to late summer and may continue into early autumn.

Regular feeding and consistent moisture will help maintain strong growth and vibrant bloom colour.

Pruning, Maintenance & Care

• Clematis ‘Rouge Cardinal’ belongs to pruning Group 3.

• Prune hard in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.

• Cut all stems back to 20–30 cm above ground level, just above a healthy pair of buds.

• This encourages strong new shoots and large summer flowers.

• Tie in new growth to supports as it develops.

• Remove any dead or weak stems as needed during the season.

• Protect young plants from severe frost during their first winter if required.

• Watch for signs of clematis wilt and ensure good air circulation around the plant.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
