Planting & Positioning

• Clematis ‘Winter Beauty’ (Clematis cirrhosa var. balearica type) is an evergreen climber valued for its creamy-white, nodding bell-shaped flowers that appear from winter into early spring.

• Ideal for training against a warm wall, trellis, pergola, or fence where its winter blooms can be appreciated.

• Best planted in full sun or light partial shade. A south- or west-facing position is ideal.

• Requires a sheltered location protected from cold, drying winds.

• Prefers fertile, well-drained soil and does not tolerate prolonged winter waterlogging.

• Improve heavy soils with grit and organic matter before planting.

• Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and slightly deeper than the pot.

• Plant with the crown set 5–8 cm below soil level to encourage strong growth.

• Backfill with compost-enriched soil, firm gently, and water thoroughly.

• Provide support at planting time and tie in young stems carefully.

This variety is particularly valuable for adding colour and interest during the colder months.

Watering, Feeding & Flowering

• Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a strong root system.

• Keep soil moist but not waterlogged.

• Once established, it is moderately drought tolerant but benefits from watering during dry spells.

• Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser.

• Avoid excessive nitrogen-rich fertilisers, which may promote leafy growth at the expense of flowers.

• Flowering typically begins in late autumn or early winter and continues into early spring.

• The creamy-white flowers may have delicate speckling inside and are followed by attractive fluffy seed heads.

• Container-grown plants require more regular watering and feeding.

The winter blooms provide valuable nectar for early pollinators on mild days.

Pruning, Maintenance & Winter Care

• Clematis ‘Winter Beauty’ belongs to pruning Group 1.

• Requires minimal pruning.

• If shaping is needed, prune lightly after flowering in spring.

• Remove any dead, damaged, or overcrowded stems as necessary.

• Avoid hard pruning, as flowers are produced on the previous season’s growth.

• Protect young plants from severe frost during their first winters.

• In very cold areas, provide additional winter protection with horticultural fleece.

• Ensure excellent drainage to prevent root problems during wet winters.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
