Planting & Positioning

• Clematis viticella ‘Rubra’ is a vigorous, deciduous climber producing elegant, deep wine-red to burgundy flowers throughout summer.

• Ideal for covering trellis, fences, pergolas, arches, or scrambling through shrubs and climbing roses.

• Best planted in full sun or light partial shade for the heaviest flowering.

• Keep the roots cool and shaded while allowing the upper growth to reach sunlight.

• Prefers fertile, moist but well-drained soil enriched with organic matter.

• Avoid sites that remain waterlogged, particularly during winter.

• Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and slightly deeper than the pot.

• Plant with the crown set 5–8 cm below soil level to encourage strong new shoots and reduce the risk of clematis wilt.

• Backfill with compost-enriched soil, firm gently, and water thoroughly.

• Apply a mulch around the base to retain moisture and protect the root zone.

This viticella variety is particularly reliable and well suited to Irish and UK gardens.

Watering, Feeding & Flowering

• Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system.

• Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.

• During dry spells, water deeply to ensure moisture reaches the roots.

• Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser.

• Apply a high-potash fertiliser in early summer to promote abundant flowering.

• Avoid excessive nitrogen-rich feeds, which may encourage foliage growth over flowers.

• Flowers appear from mid-summer into early autumn.

• Deadheading is not essential, but removing spent blooms can tidy the plant.

• Container-grown plants require more frequent watering and feeding.

Clematis viticella types are known for their long flowering period and resilience.

Pruning, Maintenance & Care

• Clematis viticella ‘Rubra’ belongs to pruning Group 3.

• Prune hard in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.

• Cut all stems back to 20–30 cm above ground level, just above a healthy pair of buds.

• This encourages strong new growth and abundant summer flowers.

• Tie in new shoots as they grow to maintain good coverage and support.

• Remove any dead or weak stems during the growing season.

• Generally resistant to clematis wilt and low maintenance when properly planted.

• Apply fresh mulch annually in spring to conserve moisture and improve soil condition.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
