Planting Convallaria majalis (Lily of the Valley)
Convallaria majalis, commonly known as Lily of the Valley, is a charming, low-growing perennial prized for its delicate, nodding white bell-shaped flowers and sweet fragrance. It forms a dense carpet of foliage, making it ideal for shaded areas and woodland-style planting.
Choosing the right position
- Prefers partial shade to full shade
- Ideal for woodland gardens, under trees, or shaded borders
- Tolerates some sun if soil remains consistently moist
- Excellent for ground cover in difficult, shady areas
- Choose a sheltered position protected from strong winds
Soil requirements
- Thrives in moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil
- Prefers slightly acidic to neutral conditions
- Tolerates a range of soil types, including clay if improved
- Avoid very dry or waterlogged soils
- Improve soil with compost or leaf mould before planting
How to plant
- Plant pips (root divisions) with the tips just at soil level
- Space plants around 15–20cm apart for good coverage
- Dig a hole slightly larger than the root system
- Backfill with enriched soil and firm gently
- Water thoroughly after planting
- Apply a mulch to help retain moisture
Planting in containers
- Use a pot with good drainage holes
- Fill with a moisture-retentive compost
- Plant pips just below the surface
- Water well and place in a shaded or partially shaded position
- Ensure consistent moisture for best results
Ongoing Care and Maintenance
Convallaria majalis is easy to grow and requires minimal maintenance once established.
Watering
- Keep soil consistently moist, especially during the growing season
- Water regularly during dry periods
- Container-grown plants require more frequent watering
- Avoid letting the soil dry out completely
- Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot
Feeding
- Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to support growth
- Annual mulching with compost or leaf mould helps maintain soil fertility
- Feeding is usually minimal once plants are established
- Avoid excessive fertiliser, which can reduce flowering
Pruning and tidying
- Remove spent flowers to keep the plant tidy
- Cut back yellowing foliage after it dies down naturally
- Allow foliage to die back fully to feed the roots for next year
- Remove any unwanted spreading if necessary
Mulching
- Apply organic mulch in spring or autumn
- Helps retain moisture and improve soil structure
- Suppresses weeds and keeps roots cool
- Keep mulch away from the crown of the plant
Seasonal Care and Common Issues
With the right conditions, Convallaria majalis will spread steadily and provide reliable spring interest year after year.
Seasonal interest
- Produces fragrant white bell-shaped flowers in mid to late spring
- Followed by glossy green foliage through summer
- Forms a dense ground cover over time
- Adds a classic, woodland feel to shaded areas
Winter care
- Fully hardy and tolerant of cold temperatures
- Dies back in autumn and re-emerges in spring
- Mulch in autumn to protect roots in colder areas
- Requires little to no winter maintenance
Common problems
- Can spread vigorously and may need controlling in small spaces
- Yellowing leaves may indicate dry soil or poor conditions
- Generally pest and disease resistant
- Slugs may occasionally damage young shoots
- All parts of the plant are toxic if ingested, so handle with care
Convallaria majalis is a beautiful and reliable perennial that brings fragrance, elegance, and ground cover to shaded garden areas. Its low-maintenance nature and ability to thrive in difficult spots make it a valuable addition to woodland gardens and underplanting schemes. With consistent moisture and minimal care, it will establish well and provide a delightful display each spring
