Planting Cordyline australis 125–150cm Multistem

Cordyline australis, commonly known as Cabbage Palm, is a striking architectural plant that brings height, structure and an exotic feel to gardens and large containers. A 125–150cm multistem specimen provides instant impact, with multiple stems creating a fuller, more dramatic look.

Choosing the right position

• Prefers a sunny or lightly shaded spot

• Thrives in a sheltered location, protected from strong, cold winds

• Ideal for coastal gardens as it tolerates salt-laden air

• Works well as a focal point in borders or in large patio containers

Soil requirements

• Grows best in well-drained soil

• Tolerates a range of soil types, including sandy and loamy soils

• Avoid heavy, waterlogged ground which can cause root rot

• If planting in clay soil, improve drainage with grit or organic matter

How to plant in the ground

• Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and roughly the same depth

• Loosen the soil at the base of the hole to encourage root establishment

• Place the plant so the top of the root ball sits level with the surrounding soil

• Backfill with soil, firm gently, and water thoroughly

• Apply a layer of mulch around the base, keeping it clear of the stem

Planting in containers

• Choose a large, sturdy pot with drainage holes

• Use a high-quality, free-draining compost

• Add grit to improve drainage if necessary

• Ensure the plant is stable, especially in exposed areas

• Water well after planting and allow excess water to drain away

• Container plants benefit from liquid feeding every 4–6 weeks during the growing season

• Avoid excessive feeding, which can lead to weak, soft growth

Pruning and tidying

• Remove damaged or yellowing lower leaves as needed

• Cut away any winter-damaged foliage in spring

• If the plant becomes too tall, it can be cut back; new shoots often form below the cut

• Use clean, sharp tools when pruning

Mulching

• Apply organic mulch in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds

• Keep mulch a few centimetres away from the stems to prevent rot

• Plant in a sheltered location or use windbreaks if necessary

• Pests are uncommon but occasionally include aphids or scale insects

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
