Cupressus macrocarpa 'Goldcrest Wilma' is a compact, evergreen conifer valued for its vibrant chartreuse-yellow foliage and naturally conical shape. Its citrus-scented needles and tidy growth habit make it ideal for pots, borders, and formal plantings, both indoors and outdoors.

• Light Requirements: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Bright light maintains its strong golden colour; in deep shade, the foliage may turn more green than yellow.

• Indoor vs Outdoor: Suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, though long-term success is better outdoors. Indoors, ensure it's placed near a bright window with good air circulation.

• Soil Type: Thrives in well-draining soil. A loamy or sandy soil is ideal; avoid waterlogged or heavy clay soils.

• Soil pH: Tolerates a wide pH range but performs best in slightly acidic to neutral soil conditions.

• Planting Outdoors: Plant in spring or autumn. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and to the same depth. Backfill with enriched compost if soil is poor.

• Spacing: Allow 50–100 cm between plants if growing as a low hedge or group planting, depending on final size goals.

• Container Planting: Perfect for containers and patio pots. Use a loam-based compost with added grit or perlite for drainage. Ensure the container has drainage holes.

Watering, Feeding, and General Maintenance

'Goldcrest Wilma' is easy to maintain when its basic requirements are met. Regular monitoring for water and nutrition keeps the plant healthy and its colour vibrant.

• Watering: Keep soil evenly moist, especially in warm weather. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely. Overwatering and soggy roots can lead to root rot.

• Watering Indoors: Mist foliage occasionally to raise humidity, especially in centrally heated rooms.

• Feeding: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring. For potted plants, use a liquid feed every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (March to September).

• Pruning: Minimal pruning required. Trim lightly in spring or early summer to maintain shape or remove errant growth. Avoid hard pruning into old wood, as recovery may be slow or incomplete.

• Mulching: Apply a mulch of bark or compost around the base of outdoor plants in spring to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.

• Repotting: For container plants, repot every 2–3 years into a slightly larger pot to prevent root binding and refresh the soil.

• Cleaning: Indoors, wipe or gently spray foliage to remove dust and keep the needles healthy.

Cold Protection, Pests, and Long-Term Care

While Goldcrest Wilma is generally resilient, a few proactive steps ensure it remains attractive and healthy over the long term.

• Frost Tolerance: Hardy to around -5°C to -10°C, though young or potted plants should be protected during hard frosts. In colder areas, bring containers into a sheltered location or greenhouse over winter.

• Winter Colour Retention: In colder weather, the foliage may bronze slightly. This is temporary and should revert in spring.

• Wind Exposure: Protect from harsh, drying winds which can scorch the delicate foliage. Ideal placement includes sheltered courtyards, patios, or protected garden beds.

• Pests: Generally pest-free, though aphids or scale insects may occasionally appear, especially on indoor plants. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary.

• Diseases: Watch for signs of root rot or fungal infection, often caused by poor drainage or overwatering.

• Scented Foliage: The soft, lemon-scented needles are a unique feature. The fragrance is strongest when the foliage is gently brushed or on warm days.

• Lifespan and Size: Grows slowly to 1.5–2 metres tall in containers and up to 3–5 metres in the ground over many years. Can be trimmed and shaped to keep it compact.

• Garden Uses: Excellent in formal planters, entrance pots, topiary forms, small hedges, and decorative groupings. Also well-suited for coastal and urban gardens.

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
