Planting Conditions and Ideal Location

• Light Requirements: Prefers partial shade to dappled sunlight. Avoid harsh midday sun, which can scorch the foliage, especially during summer dormancy.

• Soil Preferences: Best in well-drained, humus-rich soil. A mix of garden soil with leaf mould or compost provides the ideal growing medium.

• pH Range: Tolerates slightly acidic to neutral soils (pH 6.0–7.0).

• Moisture Needs: Requires moist soil during the active growth and flowering period but should be kept relatively dry during summer dormancy.

• Planting Time: Plant tubers in autumn or pot-grown plants any time during their active season. Position the tuber just below the soil surface, with the top slightly exposed.

• Spacing: Allow around 15–20 cm between plants for a natural drift effect in beds or under trees.

• Positioning Tips: Ideal for woodland gardens, shaded borders, rock gardens, or underplanting beneath deciduous trees.

• Shelter Needs: Hardy varieties can tolerate light frost, but in colder areas, plant in sheltered spots or provide winter protection.

• Container Growing: Perfect for pots, bowls, and window boxes. Use a free-draining peat-free compost and elevate pots to prevent waterlogging.

Routine Care, Feeding, and Seasonal Maintenance

• Watering:

  • Water moderately during the growth and flowering period (autumn to spring).

  • Reduce watering significantly once the leaves yellow and plants enter summer dormancy.

  • Avoid watering directly over the tuber to reduce the risk of rot—water from below or at soil level.

• Feeding: Apply a liquid balanced feed every 2–3 weeks during the growing season to encourage strong blooms and healthy foliage.

• Deadheading: Remove spent flowers and yellowing leaves by twisting stems gently at the base—this encourages more blooms and keeps plants tidy.

• Mulching: Apply a thin layer of leaf mould or fine compost in autumn to enrich soil and retain moisture without covering the crown.

• Pest and Disease Resistance: Generally trouble-free but may be affected by vine weevils, grey mould, or aphids. Good airflow and careful watering help prevent problems.

• Winter Care: Hardy cyclamen can survive light frost; for potted plants, move to a frost-free, cool, and bright location during very cold spells.

• Summer Dormancy: Allow foliage to die back naturally, reduce watering, and store tubers in their pots or beds until cooler temperatures return.

Ornamental Features, Seasonal Interest, and Garden Uses

• Foliage: Attractive heart-shaped leaves, often patterned with silver or marbled markings, provide interest even when plants are not in flower.

• Flowers: Elegant nodding blooms in shades of pink, red, purple, and white appear from autumn to spring, depending on the variety. Petals are swept back, giving a delicate, butterfly-like look.

• Fragrance: Many varieties have a gentle, sweet scent, especially noticeable in sheltered spots.

• Wildlife Benefits: Nectar-rich flowers attract pollinators such as bees in the cooler months when other plants are scarce.

• Ornamental Value: Offers vibrant winter colour and texture when little else is in bloom.

• Garden Design Uses:

  • Perfect for woodland and shade gardens.

  • Beautiful in rockeries and under trees.

  • Works well in winter containers and seasonal displays.

  • Can be naturalised in grass or along shady paths for a wildflower effect.

• Growth and Size: Compact perennial, typically 10–15 cm in height, with a spread of around 15 cm.

• Longevity: Long-lived if left undisturbed, with clumps increasing in size each year.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
