Positioning and Planting Cyclamen XL Red
Cyclamen XL Red is a large-flowered florist cyclamen, usually derived from Cyclamen persicum. It produces vivid red, upswept flowers above attractively patterned, heart-shaped leaves. Best displayed during autumn and winter, it is suitable for cool indoor rooms, conservatories, sheltered porches and temporary outdoor containers protected from severe frost.
-
Position indoor plants in bright, indirect light. An east-facing or west-facing windowsill is often suitable if the plant is protected from intense midday sunshine.
-
Keep the plant cool, ideally between approximately 10°C and 18°C. Warm rooms can shorten flowering and cause leaves or buds to collapse.
-
Avoid placing it beside radiators, fireplaces, heating vents or warm appliances.
-
Protect the plant from cold draughts and direct contact with freezing window glass.
-
Outdoors, choose a sheltered position in light shade with protection from heavy rain and frost.
-
Cyclamen XL types are generally less hardy than smaller outdoor cyclamen and should not be relied upon to survive severe winter conditions.
-
Use a container with unobstructed drainage holes and free-draining peat-free houseplant or cyclamen compost.
-
Keep the top of the tuber at or slightly above the compost surface. Burying it deeply can encourage crown rot.
-
Place the nursery pot inside a decorative container only if excess water can be removed easily after every watering.
Watering, Feeding and Seasonal Care
Correct watering is essential for keeping a cyclamen healthy. The compost should remain moderately moist during active growth without becoming saturated around the tuber.
-
Check the compost regularly and water when the upper surface begins to feel dry.
-
Water from below by standing the pot in a shallow container of room-temperature water for approximately ten minutes.
-
Remove the plant and allow it to drain completely before returning it to its usual position.
-
Alternatively, water carefully around the edge of the pot, keeping moisture away from the tuber, crown, leaves and flower stems.
-
Never leave the plant standing permanently in water. Saturated compost can quickly cause root and tuber rot.
-
Reduce watering if leaves begin yellowing naturally after flowering and the plant starts entering dormancy.
-
Feed every two to four weeks during active growth with a diluted, high-potassium liquid fertiliser.
-
Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage soft leaf growth while reducing flower production.
-
Stop feeding when flowering finishes and the foliage begins to die back.
-
Maintain gentle airflow around the plant, but avoid strong draughts and sudden temperature changes.
-
Do not mist the foliage. Water trapped around the crown can encourage grey mould and decay.
Flowering and Ongoing Maintenance
Regular removal of faded flowers and damaged leaves helps maintain the display and prevents decaying material from collecting around the crown.
-
Remove each faded flower by holding its stem near the base, twisting gently and pulling it cleanly from the tuber.
-
Use the same method to remove yellow or damaged leaves. Avoid leaving short stem stubs, which may rot.
-
Inspect the crown frequently and remove fallen petals or other debris before it begins to decay.
-
Rotate the pot periodically so that all sides receive comparable light and the plant develops evenly.
-
Check leaves and stems for aphids, spider mites, thrips and cyclamen mites.
-
Soft stems, a collapsing crown or an unpleasant smell usually indicate excessive moisture or rot.
-
Yellow leaves may result from natural ageing, excessive warmth, waterlogging or insufficient light.
-
After flowering, allow the leaves to yellow naturally while gradually reducing water.
-
Keep the resting tuber in a cool, dry but not completely desiccated location during dormancy.
-
Resume light watering when fresh leaves begin appearing, usually in late summer or autumn.
-
Repot at the start of renewed growth using fresh, free-draining compost and a pot only slightly larger than the tuber.
-
Many florist cyclamen are treated as seasonal plants because maintaining them through dormancy and encouraging reliable reblooming can be challenging.
-
Keep Cyclamen away from pets and children who may chew it. The tuber and other parts are harmful if eaten.
-
With bright filtered light, cool temperatures, careful watering and regular deadheading, Cyclamen XL Red will provide an impressive and long-lasting seasonal flower display
