Dianthus caryophyllus 'Peman' is a compact, floriferous variety of perpetual flowering carnation, known for its tight mounding habit, abundant blooms, and clove-like fragrance. Ideal for sunny borders, containers, or rock gardens, 'Peman' offers a long flowering season and reliably returns year after year in suitable conditions.

This variety produces attractive double flowers, typically in shades of pale pink, rose, or creamy white, set against narrow, silvery-green foliage that forms a neat clump. Its tidy growth and scented flowers make it a customer favourite for cottage gardens, path edging, or cutting gardens.

Planting and Growing Conditions

Dianthus 'Peman' is easy to grow and thrives in well-drained soils with ample sunlight. It dislikes winter wetness and benefits from slightly alkaline soil.

  • Avoid heavy shade—causes leggy growth and poor blooming

• Soil Preferences:

  • Prefers well-drained, alkaline to neutral soils

  • Sandy or gritty loam is ideal

  • Avoid heavy clay or waterlogged conditions—raises risk of crown rot

• Watering:

  • Water regularly during dry spells in the first season

  • Once established, Dianthus is fairly drought-tolerant

  • Avoid overwatering, especially in winter

• Feeding:

  • Feed lightly with a balanced fertiliser in early spring

  • A high-potash feed (like tomato food) helps promote flowering

  • Avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers that cause lush, floppy growth

Maintenance and Pruning

Dianthus 'Peman' is low-maintenance but benefits from light grooming to stay at its best.

• Deadheading:

  • Remove spent flowers regularly to extend blooming

  • Encourages continual flushes from late spring to autumn

• Trimming:

  • After main flowering, trim lightly to reshape and encourage a tidy mound

  • Cut back hard in early spring if the plant has become leggy

• Winter Care:

  • Good drainage is critical to winter survival

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
