Dicksonia antarctica – Planting & Care Guide

About Dicksonia antarctica

Dicksonia antarctica, commonly known as the Tasmanian Tree Fern, is one of the most striking architectural plants for the garden. Native to the cool, damp forests of Australia and Tasmania, this magnificent evergreen fern creates a lush, tropical appearance with its large, graceful fronds that emerge from a thick, fibrous trunk.

Although slow-growing, Dicksonia antarctica is a long-lived plant that becomes more impressive with age. Mature specimens can eventually reach 2–5 metres in height, while the elegant fronds spread 2–3 metres, creating a dramatic focal point in woodland gardens, shaded borders and courtyard planting. Its timeless beauty makes it a favourite for adding year-round structure and a tropical feel to gardens throughout Ireland.

Planting Guide

  • Plant in partial shade or full shade.
  • Choose a sheltered location protected from strong winds.
  • Prefers fertile, humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil.
  • Improve the soil with plenty of compost, leaf mould or well-rotted organic matter before planting.
  • Dig a planting hole wide enough to comfortably accommodate the root ball.
  • Position the trunk upright with the root ball level with the surrounding soil.
  • Firm the soil gently around the base and water thoroughly after planting.
  • Apply a generous layer of organic mulch around the base to help retain moisture.
  • Water the trunk as well as the soil during dry weather, as the plant absorbs moisture through the trunk.
  • Allow at least 2–3 metres of space for the mature spread of the fronds.

Care & Maintenance

Dicksonia antarctica thrives in consistently cool, damp conditions and benefits from regular care.

  • Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during spring and summer.
  • Water the crown and trunk regularly during dry periods.
  • Avoid allowing the plant to dry out completely.
  • Feed in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser.
  • Apply liquid seaweed feed occasionally during the growing season to encourage healthy fronds.
  • Mulch annually with compost or leaf mould to improve soil moisture and fertility.
  • Remove weeds carefully from around the base.
  • Avoid damaging the fibrous trunk.
  • During prolonged dry weather, mist the fronds if possible to increase humidity.

Winter Protection

Dicksonia antarctica is hardy in much of Ireland but benefits from protection during severe cold weather.

  • Protect the crown with straw or horticultural fleece during hard frosts.
  • Wrap the trunk with fleece in prolonged freezing weather.
  • Remove winter protection once the risk of severe frost has passed.
  • Container-grown plants may need extra protection during particularly cold winters.
  • Avoid waterlogging during winter while keeping the trunk from drying out.

Common Problems

Dicksonia antarctica is generally healthy when grown in the right conditions.

  • Dry soil or trunk can cause browning and poor frond development.
  • Young fronds may be damaged by late frosts.
  • Strong winds can tear or scorch the fronds.
  • Waterlogged soil may lead to root problems.
  • Slugs and snails may occasionally feed on newly emerging fronds.

With its majestic evergreen fronds, architectural form and tropical appearance, Dicksonia antarctica is one of the most spectacular foliage plants for Irish gardens. Slow-growing yet exceptionally long-lived, it provides year-round beauty and creates a stunning focal point in woodland, shaded and tropical-style planting schemes for generations to enjoy
