Fagus sylvatica ‘Purpurea Pendula’ Care Guide
Fagus sylvatica ‘Purpurea Pendula’, also known as the Weeping Purple Beech, is a striking small tree with gracefully cascading branches and rich deep purple foliage. Naturally slow-growing and compact, it forms a beautiful rounded dome, making it ideal for smaller gardens or as a statement specimen. Hardy, elegant, and long-lived, it offers dramatic colour in summer and warm copper tones in autumn.
Planting & Position
Plant your weeping beech carefully to ensure a strong start and long-term beauty.
-
Light requirements:
-
Best in full sun for the richest purple leaf colour.
-
Tolerates light partial shade but may appear more green-bronze.
-
-
Shelter:
-
Prefers a sheltered site, avoiding strong, drying winds that can damage young leaves.
-
-
Soil:
-
Thrives in fertile, well-drained, moist soils.
-
Grows well in loam or sandy soils; tolerates light clay if not waterlogged.
-
Prefers neutral to slightly acidic pH; avoid very chalky or shallow soils.
-
-
Planting time:
-
Best planted in autumn or early spring while the tree is dormant and soil is workable.
-
-
Spacing & size:
-
Mature height: 2–4 m, with a similar spread, but cascading habit keeps it compact.
-
Allow space for the elegant weeping branches to drape naturally.
-
-
Container growing:
-
Possible when young, but best planted in the ground for long-term health and full shape.
-
Care & Maintenance
Once established, Fagus sylvatica ‘Purpurea Pendula’ is easy to maintain and very hardy.
-
Watering:
-
Water regularly during the first 2–3 years, especially in dry spells.
-
Mature trees are drought-tolerant but appreciate occasional deep watering in prolonged heat.
-
-
Feeding:
-
Feed in spring with a slow-release balanced fertiliser or well-rotted compost to encourage healthy leaf growth.
-
-
Mulching:
-
Apply a layer of compost, leaf mould, or bark mulch in spring to conserve moisture and protect surface roots.
-
Keep mulch clear of the trunk.
-
-
Pruning:
-
Requires very little pruning; naturally forms a graceful dome.
-
Lightly prune in late summer if needed to remove dead, crossing, or awkward shoots.
-
Avoid heavy pruning or cutting into old wood.
-
-
Pests & diseases:
-
Generally healthy but may rarely be affected by aphids or beech scale.
-
Ensure good air circulation to reduce fungal leaf spots.
-
-
Hardiness:
-
Fully hardy in the UK and Ireland; withstands frost and cold winters well.
