Fargesia rufa – Planting & Care Guide

About Fargesia rufa

Fargesia rufa, commonly known as Fountain Bamboo or Chinese Fountain Bamboo, is a graceful, non-invasive, clump-forming evergreen bamboo. Its arching green canes and fine, bright green foliage create a soft, elegant appearance that provides year-round colour and movement in the garden.

Unlike running bamboos, Fargesia rufa does not spread aggressively, making it an excellent choice for smaller gardens and areas where controlled growth is important. It typically reaches 2–3 metres in height with a spread of 1.5–2 metres, making it ideal for screening, hedging, specimen planting and large containers. It is exceptionally hardy and performs well throughout Ireland, even in exposed locations.

Planting Guide

  • Plant in full sun, partial shade or light shade.
  • Prefers a sheltered position but tolerates wind better than many other bamboo varieties.
  • Thrives in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil.
  • Improve poor soils by adding compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting.
  • Dig a planting hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
  • Carefully remove the plant from its pot and gently loosen any compacted roots.
  • Position the root ball level with the surrounding soil.
  • Backfill with soil, firm gently and water thoroughly.
  • Apply a 5–8cm layer of organic mulch around the base to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Space plants 1–1.5 metres apart for a dense hedge or 2 metres apart for specimen planting.

Care & Maintenance

Fargesia rufa is easy to grow and requires very little maintenance once established.

  • Water regularly during the first growing season.
  • Keep the soil consistently moist, particularly during warm, dry weather.
  • Once established, water during prolonged dry spells.
  • Feed in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser.
  • A nitrogen-rich feed in spring encourages lush, healthy foliage.
  • Refresh mulch annually to improve soil fertility and conserve moisture.
  • Remove weeds from around the base regularly.
  • Water container-grown plants more frequently, especially during summer.
  • Avoid allowing the roots to dry out completely.

Pruning

Minimal pruning is required to keep the plant healthy and attractive.

  • Remove any dead, damaged or weak canes in late winter or early spring.
  • Thin out older canes occasionally to improve airflow and encourage fresh growth.
  • Trim lightly to maintain the desired height or shape if used as a hedge.
  • Remove any yellowing leaves or damaged foliage throughout the year.
  • Avoid cutting back all the canes, as this will reduce the plant's natural screening effect.

  • Dense evergreen growth offers privacy throughout the year.
  • Attractive foliage remains vibrant through autumn and winter.
  • Mature clumps become increasingly elegant with age.

Common Problems

Fargesia rufa is generally healthy and trouble-free.

  • Leaf curl during hot weather usually indicates the need for watering.
  • Poor drainage may lead to root problems.
  • Container-grown plants require more frequent watering than those planted in the ground.
  • Strong drying winds may cause minor leaf scorch in exposed sites.
  • Remove any dead or damaged canes promptly to keep the plant looking its best.

With its graceful arching habit, non-invasive growth and evergreen foliage, Fargesia rufa is one of the best bamboos for Irish gardens. Easy to grow and exceptionally hardy, it provides year-round privacy, structure and movement, making it an ideal choice for screening, hedging, containers and modern garden designs
