Positioning and Using Bell Cloches

This three-pack of 26 cm bell cloches provides individual protection for young plants, seedlings and newly established crops. Each cloche creates a sheltered microclimate around one plant, helping retain warmth, reduce wind exposure and protect tender growth from light frost, birds and some garden pests. They are suitable for vegetable plots, raised beds, borders and containers.

  • Position a cloche directly over a young plant, ensuring that the foliage does not press tightly against the sides.

  • Press or secure the base firmly against the soil so that strong winds cannot lift it.

  • Use the cloches when establishing lettuce, herbs, brassicas, strawberries, courgettes and other young plants.

  • Place them over newly planted specimens during cool spring weather to encourage quicker establishment.

  • Use on level ground wherever possible. Fill gaps around the base with soil if cold air can enter beneath the edge.

  • Allow enough space for the plant to grow. Remove or replace the cloche before the foliage becomes crowded.

  • Mark the position of the cloches clearly in busy beds to prevent accidental damage from tools or machinery.

  • Do not place them over plants during extremely hot, sunny conditions without ventilation.

  • Ensure the soil is moist before covering a plant, as rainfall may not reach the enclosed root area effectively.

  • Check that any vents or adjustable openings are clear and operating correctly before use.

Ventilation, Watering and Plant Protection

A bell cloche can become considerably warmer than the surrounding air. Regular ventilation and moisture checks are essential to prevent overheating, wilting and fungal disease.

  • Open the vents during mild or sunny weather to release excess heat and humidity.

  • Remove the cloche temporarily on warm days if it does not have adjustable ventilation.

  • Replace the cover before temperatures fall in the evening when frost protection is still required.

  • Check the soil beneath each cloche regularly. The enclosed area may remain moist for longer, but the cover can also prevent rain from reaching the roots.

  • Water at the base of the plant rather than over the foliage.

  • Avoid excessive watering, as trapped humidity and saturated soil may encourage grey mould, damping-off and root rot.

  • Inspect plants frequently for slugs, snails and other pests. A cloche can trap pests inside if the area is not checked before installation.

  • Clear weeds from beneath the cover so they do not compete with the protected plant for water and nutrients.

  • Remove dead leaves and fallen plant material promptly to maintain good hygiene.

  • Lift the cloche gradually as the plant grows, allowing increased airflow and helping it adjust to outdoor conditions.

  • Harden plants off before removing protection permanently by increasing ventilation over several days.

  • Remember that a lightweight bell cloche provides only limited protection during severe or prolonged frost.

Cleaning, Storage and Reuse

Correct cleaning and storage will extend the useful life of the cloches and reduce the risk of transferring pests or diseases between crops.

  • Wash the cloches after each growing period using warm water and mild detergent.

  • Remove soil, algae and plant debris from the surface, rim and ventilation openings.

  • Disinfect them before moving between plants if fungal disease, pests or damping-off have been present.

  • Rinse thoroughly after cleaning so no detergent or disinfectant residue remains.

  • Allow the cloches to dry completely before stacking or storing them.

  • Inspect each cloche for cracks, sharp edges or damaged vents. Replace badly damaged covers that could injure plants or users.

  • Store them in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight when not in use.

  • Avoid placing heavy objects on top of the cloches, as this may distort or crack them.

  • Stack only if their shape allows it without forcing them together.

  • Secure stored cloches so that they cannot blow around sheds, yards or gardens during windy weather.

  • Keep them away from open flames, heaters and other sources of high temperature.

  • Label cloches used for diseased plants until they have been thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.

  • Reuse them for successive sowings, moving each cover once the previous plant is established and no longer requires protection.

  • With secure positioning, careful ventilation, regular plant checks and proper cleaning, this three-pack of 26 cm bell cloches can provide dependable protection across many growing seasons
