Planting Hedera helix Mix (P8.5)

Hedera helix, commonly known as English Ivy, is a versatile and hardy evergreen plant. Supplied in a P8.5 pot, these young plants establish quickly and can be used as climbers, ground cover, or trailing plants. Mixed varieties offer a range of leaf shapes and colours, adding year-round interest to the garden.

Choosing the right position

• Thrives in full shade to partial sun
• Will tolerate full sun if soil remains moist
• Ideal for walls, fences, trellises, or as ground cover
• Suitable for shaded or difficult areas where other plants may struggle
• Works well in containers, hanging baskets, or window boxes

Soil requirements

• Grows in most soil types including clay, loam, and sandy soils
• Prefers well-drained soil but is highly adaptable
• Tolerates neutral to slightly alkaline conditions
• Can cope with poorer soils once established
• Improve soil with compost before planting for best results

How to plant in the ground

• Dig a hole slightly larger than the root ball
• Position the plant so the root ball is level with the soil surface
• Backfill with soil and firm gently
• Water thoroughly after planting
• Space plants around 25–40cm apart depending on coverage required
• Provide support if planting as a climber

Planting in containers

• Use a pot with good drainage holes
• Fill with a multi-purpose compost
• Plant at the same depth as in the pot
• Water well after planting
• Place in sun or shade depending on preference

Ongoing Care and Maintenance

Hedera helix is very low maintenance and grows vigorously once established.

Watering

• Water regularly during the first growing season
• Once established, it is drought tolerant
• Container plants require more frequent watering
• Avoid waterlogging, especially in pots
• Check soil moisture during prolonged dry periods

Feeding

• Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to encourage growth
• Container plants benefit from occasional liquid feeding
• Ivy generally requires minimal feeding once established
• Avoid overfeeding, which can lead to excessive growth

Pruning and training

• Trim regularly to control size and shape
• Cut back unwanted or overgrown stems at any time of year
• Train climbing stems onto supports as needed
• Remove any plain green shoots from variegated varieties
• Regular pruning encourages dense, bushy growth

• Keep mulch away from the base of the stems

All standard deliveries will be completed within 5-7 working days via DPD Couriers, any delay to this delivery time, the customer will be notified by One of our staff.

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.
 

Click & Collect

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
