Hedera Mix Care Guide

Hedera — commonly known as ivy — is a versatile evergreen climber and trailing plant prized for its lush foliage and year-round structure. A mix of different leaf colours and patterns (from classic deep green to variegated yellow and cream) provides interest for both indoor and outdoor use. Ivy is ideal for climbers on walls and fences, trailing in pots and baskets, or as ground cover under shrubs and trees. Easy to grow and long-lasting, it suits both formal and naturalistic planting schemes.

Planting & Position

Choosing the right site ensures your ivy will thrive and look its best.

• Light requirements:

  • Most ivies grow in partial to full shade, though variegated types appreciate some indirect sun to keep leaf colour strong.

  • Avoid very hot, dry, sunny spots, which can scorch leaves.

• Soil:

  • Grows in most soil types, from clay to sandy, as long as it’s well-drained.

  • Prefers fertile, moist, humus-rich soils but is highly adaptable.

• Planting time:

  • Best planted in spring or autumn, when the soil is moist and temperatures are mild.

• Spacing:

  • For ground cover, space plants 30–45 cm apart to allow them to spread.

  • As a climber, plant at the base of walls, fences, or pergolas, 30–40 cm away from the structure.

• Container planting:

  • Thrives in pots and hanging baskets; use quality multipurpose compost mixed with a little grit for drainage.

Care & Maintenance

Ivy is generally low-maintenance but benefits from occasional care to stay neat and healthy.

• Watering:

  • Water regularly during the first year while establishing.

  • Once mature, ivy is drought-tolerant but performs best with consistent moisture in dry spells.

  • Container plants need more frequent watering, especially in summer.

• Feeding:

  • Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring to late summer).

  • In containers, feed monthly to keep foliage lush.

• Pruning & shaping:

  • Trim back straggly or overlong shoots any time of year to keep plants tidy.

  • For climbers, prune in late winter or early spring to control size and encourage dense growth.

  • Ground cover plants can be mown or cut back hard if they become invasive.

• Mulching:

  • Apply compost or leaf mould in spring to conserve moisture and improve soil.

• Pests & diseases:

  • Generally pest-free, though aphids and scale insects may appear on stressed plants.

  • Avoid overwatering in pots to reduce the risk of root rot.

• Hardiness:

  • Fully hardy in the UK and Ireland, tolerating frost, wind, and urban pollution.

All standard deliveries will be completed within 5-7 working days via Fastway Couriers, any delay to this delivery time, the customer will be notified by One of our staff.

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.
 

Click & Collect

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
