• About Hippeastrum Waxz®

  • Pre-treated amaryllis bulb dipped in decorative wax.

  • Designed to grow and flower indoors without soil or watering.

  • Ideal as a seasonal gift or table centrepiece, especially in winter.

• Unpacking your bulb

• Do not remove or pierce the wax; it is essential for the no-water system.

  • Check that the bulb feels firm and that the growing point at the top is intact.

• Choosing the right location

  • Place in a bright position with plenty of indirect light, such as a windowsill or table near a window.

  • Avoid strong, direct midday sun which may overheat or fade the wax and scorch young growth.

  • Keep away from cold draughts, very hot radiators or stoves, and areas where temperature fluctuates sharply.

• Temperature

  • Performs best at room temperatures between 18–23°C.

  • Slightly warmer conditions will usually speed up sprouting and flowering.

  • Avoid placing the bulb in very cool rooms below 10°C, which can slow or stop growth.

• Positioning and display

  • Many bulbs come with a small stand, wire support or flat base moulded in the wax to keep them upright.

  • If needed, place the bulb in a decorative bowl, on a saucer, or nestle it in pebbles or moss to stabilise it.

  • Ensure the pointed growing tip remains fully exposed above any decorative material.

Care During Growth and Flowering

• Watering

  • Do not water Hippeastrum Waxz® bulbs; the wax seal prevents water uptake.

  • Placing the bulb in water or very damp material can cause rotting at the base.

• Light and rotation

  • As the flower stem develops, it will naturally lean toward the light source.

  • Rotate the bulb a quarter turn every few days to encourage a straight, upright stem.

  • If the stem still leans, provide a discreet stake or support to keep it vertical.

• Growth stages

  • First, the flower stem emerges from the top of the bulb.

  • Leaves may appear either before, during or after flowering, depending on the bulb.

  • Typically, each bulb produces one or two stems, with several large flowers on each.

• Flowering time

  • From room placement to first bloom generally takes 3–8 weeks, depending on temperature and bulb condition.

  • Cooler, slightly dimmer spots delay flowering; warmer, brighter spots bring it forward.

• General care tips

  • Keep the bulb clean and free of dust to maintain an attractive finish.

  • Avoid knocking or bending the stem as it elongates; it can be brittle.

  • If displaying in a group, allow a little space between bulbs so stems and flowers do not crowd each other.

After Flowering and Troubleshooting

• When flowers fade

  • Once blooms begin to wither, carefully snip off the spent flowers to keep the display tidy.

  • Leave the stem in place until it starts to yellow or collapse naturally; the bulb may draw back some energy.

• Reusing the bulb

  • Hippeastrum Waxz® bulbs are primarily designed as single-season decorative items.

  • The wax coating prevents normal watering and root growth, shortening long-term viability.

  • If you wish to experiment, you may gently remove the wax and any attached base after flowering, then plant the bulb in potting compost, though success is not guaranteed.

• Planting a used bulb (optional experiment)

  • Choose a pot with drainage holes and a free-draining bulb compost.

  • Plant with the upper third of the bulb above the compost surface.

  • Water lightly, keep in bright light and treat like a standard amaryllis, allowing a rest period after foliage dies back.

• Common issues

  • No growth or delayed sprouting: position in a warmer, brighter spot and be patient; some bulbs take longer to wake.

  • Flower stem very tall and floppy: usually caused by low light; move closer to a window and provide support.

  • Bulb feels soft or mouldy: this indicates rot; discard and do not attempt to revive.

• Disposal and decoration ideas

  • When finished, dispose of the bulb and wax responsibly if you are not attempting to replant.

  • The decorative stand or container can be reused with other seasonal plants or ornaments

All standard deliveries will be completed within 5-7 working days via Fastway Couriers, any delay to this delivery time, the customer will be notified by One of our staff.

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.
 

Click & Collect

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
