Preparing and Sowing Johnstown Lawn Seed
Johnstown Lawn Seed in a 10 kg pack is suitable for establishing a new lawn or repairing thin, worn and damaged grass. The precise grass varieties and recommended sowing rate may vary by mixture, so always check the product packaging before application. As a general guide, lawn seed is commonly sown at approximately 25–35 grams per square metre.
-
Sow during spring or early autumn when the soil is moist, temperatures are mild and vigorous weed growth is less likely.
-
Avoid sowing during frost, extreme heat, drought or prolonged heavy rain.
-
Clear the site of weeds, stones, roots and building debris. Remove perennial weeds completely before cultivating the soil.
-
Dig or rotovate the ground to a depth of approximately 15–20 cm, breaking up compacted areas and large clods.
-
Improve heavy clay with suitable topsoil or organic matter. Add quality topsoil to very sandy or impoverished ground where necessary.
-
Allow freshly cultivated soil to settle, then firm it by walking over the area with small, overlapping steps.
-
Rake the surface in several directions until it is level, fine and reasonably firm.
-
Divide the seed and planting area into equal sections to ensure even distribution.
-
Apply half the seed in one direction and the remaining half at right angles to the first application.
-
Lightly rake the seed into the upper surface without burying it deeply. Firm gently to improve contact between the seed and soil.
Watering and Early Establishment
Newly sown grass seed must remain consistently moist during germination. Drying out after the seed begins absorbing water can result in uneven or unsuccessful establishment.
-
Water immediately after sowing using a sprinkler or fine spray that will not wash the seed into piles.
-
Keep the upper soil layer consistently moist until germination is complete and young roots are established.
-
Apply small amounts of water regularly rather than flooding the area. The exact frequency will depend on rainfall, wind, temperature and soil type.
-
Water during the morning or early evening to reduce evaporation.
-
Avoid walking on newly sown ground. Use boards temporarily if access is essential.
-
Protect the area from birds where necessary with suitable netting, ensuring wildlife cannot become trapped.
-
Monitor the surface after heavy rain and gently repair channels, puddles or areas where seed has moved.
-
Germination may occur at different times because grass species within the mixture can emerge at different rates.
-
Continue watering during dry weather after germination, gradually applying water less frequently but more deeply.
-
Remove isolated weeds by hand when the soil is moist, taking care not to disturb young grass roots.
-
Reseed bare patches once the cause of poor establishment has been corrected.
Mowing and Long-Term Lawn Care
Correct first mowing encourages the young grass to branch from its base, creating a denser and more durable lawn. Cutting too early or too closely can pull seedlings from the soil.
-
Wait until the grass reaches approximately 7–8 cm in height before mowing for the first time.
-
Make sure the mower blades are sharp and the ground is reasonably dry.
-
Remove only the upper third of the growth during the first cut, leaving the grass approximately 5 cm high.
-
Reduce the mowing height gradually over several cuts rather than cutting the new lawn very short immediately.
-
Mow regularly during active growth, adjusting frequency according to weather and the intended lawn finish.
-
Avoid scalping the lawn. Leaving the grass slightly longer during drought, shade or winter helps protect the plants.
-
Apply a suitable lawn fertiliser only after the young grass is established and has been mown several times.
-
Follow the fertiliser instructions carefully, as excessive application can scorch new grass.
-
Water established lawns deeply during prolonged drought rather than applying frequent shallow sprinklings.
-
Scarify accumulated thatch and aerate compacted soil once the lawn is mature enough to tolerate treatment.
-
Overseed thin areas during spring or early autumn, first mowing closely and loosening the soil surface.
-
Keep people, pets and machinery off saturated or frozen turf to prevent compaction and surface damage.
-
Store unused seed in its original sealed packaging somewhere cool, dry and protected from rodents.
-
With thorough preparation, even sowing, consistent moisture and careful first mowing, a 10 kg pack of Johnstown Lawn Seed can establish a healthy, dense and attractive lawn
