Positioning, Planting, and Support

Lathyrus odoratus, commonly known as Sweet Pea, is a beloved annual climber prized for its beautifully scented blooms and long flowering season. Grown on a 3 cane pyramid, it makes an elegant vertical feature perfect for borders, containers, or patio displays.

  • Preferred Location: Plant in a sunny, open position with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Good light encourages abundant flowers and strong stems.

  • Shelter: Choose a location sheltered from strong winds, which can damage delicate stems and blooms.

  • Soil Type: Requires rich, well-drained soil. Sweet peas prefer a neutral to slightly alkaline soil pH.

  • Soil Preparation: Before planting, enrich the soil with well-rotted compost or manure to improve fertility and structure.

  • Spacing: If planting more than one structure or group, allow at least 30 cm between each pyramid to ensure adequate airflow.

  • Container Growing: Sweet peas also do well in large pots. Use peat-free multipurpose compost mixed with John Innes No. 2 and ensure containers have good drainage.

  • Support: The included 3 cane pyramid support provides a perfect framework for climbing. Gently tie in young shoots with soft twine until they begin to twine naturally.

  • Planting Time: Best planted in spring after the last frost, or from autumn-sown plug plants that have been overwintered under protection.

Watering, Feeding, and General Maintenance

Sweet peas benefit from regular care throughout the season to ensure maximum flowering and healthy growth.

  • Watering: Water regularly, especially during dry periods. Keep the soil evenly moist, particularly while plants are getting established and during flowering.

  • Feeding: Begin feeding when flower buds appear. Use a high-potash liquid fertiliser (like tomato feed) every 10–14 days to promote continuous blooming.

  • Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch (like garden compost or bark) around the base in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

  • Pinching Out: Pinch out the main growing tip when plants are 10–15 cm tall. This encourages bushier growth and more flowering stems.

  • Tying In: Continue tying in new growth as it climbs to keep the plant secure on the support and to guide upward growth.

  • Deadheading: Regularly remove faded flowers to prolong blooming. If flowers are left to go to seed, the plant will stop producing new blooms.

  • Cut Flowers: Sweet peas make excellent cut flowers. Picking blooms regularly encourages more to form.

  • Scent Development: Flowers are most fragrant in the morning and can vary in scent strength depending on variety and conditions.

Pest Control, Seasonal Notes, and End-of-Life Care

With proper attention, Lathyrus odoratus will flower prolifically from early summer until autumn. Maintaining health and managing seasonal changes helps maximise its display.

  • Flowering Period: From June to September, depending on sowing time and climate. Regular maintenance extends blooming.

  • Pests:

    • Aphids can cluster on new growth—control with organic insecticidal soap or encourage beneficial insects.

    • Slugs and snails may attack young seedlings—use barriers or organic pellets.

  • Diseases:

    • Powdery mildew can appear in dry weather or overcrowded conditions. Ensure good airflow and water at the base, not over foliage.

  • End of Season:

    • As autumn approaches, flowering slows. Remove the plant once it's finished flowering and turning brown.

    • Compost old plants and clean the support for next season’s use.

  • Seed Saving: If you wish to collect seeds, allow a few seed pods to fully mature and dry on the plant before harvesting. Note that named varieties may not come true from seed.

  • Annual Lifecycle: Sweet peas are annuals—they complete their life cycle in one season. For a repeat display, new plants will need to be sown or purchased each year.

  • Overwintering: Sweet peas do not overwinter outdoors. However, autumn sowing under cover can give a head start for earlier blooms next year.

Lathyrus odoratus on a 3 cane pyramid is a romantic and fragrant addition to any garden or patio. With proper sunlight, feeding, and consistent deadheading, it offers months of exquisite blooms that are as beautiful in the garden as they are in a vase. Ideal for both seasoned gardeners and beginners, it's a true classic of summer gardens
