Liquidambar styraciflua – Planting & Care Guide
About Liquidambar styraciflua
Liquidambar styraciflua, commonly known as the Sweet Gum Tree, is a magnificent deciduous ornamental tree renowned for its spectacular autumn foliage and elegant, pyramidal shape. Its distinctive, star-shaped leaves emerge bright green in spring, provide cooling shade throughout summer, and transform into breathtaking shades of yellow, orange, scarlet, crimson, purple and burgundy in autumn.
As the tree matures, the bark develops attractive corky ridges, adding winter interest, while older specimens produce distinctive spiky seed balls that remain on the branches well into winter. Growing to approximately 15–20 metres tall with a spread of 8–12 metres, Sweet Gum is an outstanding specimen tree for larger gardens, parks and landscapes where its seasonal beauty can be fully appreciated.
Planting Guide
- Plant in full sun for the best autumn colour.
- Prefers fertile, moist but well-drained soil.
- Grows well in loam, sandy or clay soils with good drainage.
- Dig a planting hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
- Position the tree with the top of the root ball level with the surrounding soil.
- Backfill with soil enriched with organic matter, firm gently and water thoroughly.
- Apply a generous mulch around the base, keeping it away from the trunk.
- Allow 8–12 metres of space for the tree to develop its mature canopy.
Care & Maintenance
Liquidambar styraciflua is a hardy and relatively low-maintenance tree once established.
- Water regularly during the first growing season.
- Once established, water during prolonged dry periods.
- Feed in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser if growth is slow.
- Apply fresh organic mulch annually to retain moisture and improve soil fertility.
- Keep the area around the base free from weeds and grass.
- Stake young trees if planted in exposed locations.
- Avoid prolonged waterlogging.
Pruning
Very little pruning is required.
- Remove dead, damaged or crossing branches during late winter or early spring.
- Lightly shape young trees to establish a strong framework.
- Remove any basal shoots or suckers if they appear.
- Avoid heavy pruning, as the tree naturally develops an attractive form.
- Use clean, sharp pruning tools to minimise the risk of disease.
