Planting Lonicera henryi
Lonicera henryi is a vigorous evergreen or semi-evergreen climbing honeysuckle with glossy, narrow leaves and tubular summer flowers, often followed by dark berries. Supplied in a 2-litre container as a single 60 cm cane, it requires support and initial training. It is suitable for covering walls, fences, arches, pergolas and sturdy trellises.
-
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade. Flowering is usually strongest in good light, while the roots benefit from cool, lightly shaded conditions.
-
Avoid deeply shaded sites, where growth may become sparse and flower production may decline.
-
Select a location with enough space for the climber’s eventual height and spread. Its vigorous stems can cover a large structure once established.
-
Install a strong trellis, horizontal wires or another support before planting. Honeysuckle cannot attach directly to a flat surface without assistance.
-
Plant in fertile, humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Improve poor ground with well-rotted compost or leaf mould.
-
Water the plant thoroughly while it remains in its 2-litre container.
-
Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as the root ball and position it 30–45 cm away from the supporting wall or fence.
-
Set the top of the root ball level with the surrounding soil and angle the single cane gently towards its support.
-
Backfill carefully, firm gently and water generously. Secure the cane loosely with soft garden ties.
-
Apply a 5–7 cm organic mulch around the root area, keeping it clear of the stem.
Watering, Feeding and Training
Lonicera henryi needs consistent moisture while its roots establish. Mature plants tolerate short dry periods, but prolonged drought can reduce flowering and cause foliage damage.
-
Water regularly throughout the first two growing seasons, particularly during warm, dry or windy weather.
-
Pay close attention to plants beside walls, where foundations and roof overhangs can create unusually dry soil.
-
Apply water slowly across the complete root area rather than pouring it only against the base of the cane.
-
Continue watering established plants during prolonged drought. Evergreen foliage loses moisture throughout mild winter weather.
-
Check container-grown specimens frequently. Water thoroughly until excess moisture drains from the bottom, then empty any saucer or outer pot.
-
Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring as active growth begins.
-
A high-potassium liquid feed during late spring and summer may support flowering, particularly for container-grown plants.
-
Avoid excessive nitrogen, which encourages long, leafy shoots with fewer flowers.
-
Renew the organic mulch each spring to conserve moisture, suppress weeds and keep the roots cool.
-
Guide developing stems across the support and tie them loosely at regular intervals to create even coverage.
-
Check ties frequently and loosen or replace them before they cut into expanding stems.
Pruning and Ongoing Maintenance
Regular training and selective pruning keep this vigorous climber within its allocated space. The timing of pruning depends on whether growth control or maximum flowering is the main priority.
-
Complete routine pruning after flowering, removing excessive, tangled or badly positioned shoots.
-
Shorten flowered stems to a healthy side shoot or strong pair of buds.
-
Remove dead, damaged, diseased or crossing stems whenever they appear.
-
Thin congested growth to improve airflow and allow light to reach the inner foliage.
-
Renovate an overgrown plant during late winter or early spring by cutting selected old stems close to the base.
-
Avoid removing all mature growth at once unless major renovation is essential, as flowering may be reduced while the plant recovers.
-
Tie replacement shoots into the support as they develop to rebuild an even framework.
-
Remove stems approaching gutters, roof tiles, windows, cables or weak structures before they become difficult to manage.
-
Inspect young shoots for aphids and check leaves for powdery mildew, leaf spots and signs of honeysuckle mites.
-
Powdery mildew is more likely when roots are dry and air circulation is poor. Water deeply and thin congested growth where necessary.
-
Semi-evergreen plants may lose some foliage during severe frost or exposed winter conditions. Remove damaged leaves and shoots once new spring growth appears.
-
Berries should not be eaten, so position the plant thoughtfully where children or pets are unlikely to consume them.
-
Wear gloves during pruning if you have sensitive skin and clean tools after removing diseased material.
-
With fertile soil, dependable moisture, sturdy support and regular training, this single-cane Lonicera henryi will develop into a dense and attractive evergreen climber
