Malus 'Red Sentinel' – Planting & Care Guide
About Malus 'Red Sentinel'
Malus × robusta 'Red Sentinel', commonly known as Crab Apple 'Red Sentinel', is an outstanding small ornamental tree offering excellent interest across several seasons.
In spring, branches are covered with attractive pink-flushed buds that open into masses of white blossom, creating a beautiful display and providing a valuable source of nectar and pollen for bees and other pollinating insects.
The flowers are followed by clusters of glossy bright red crab apples. One of the outstanding features of 'Red Sentinel' is that its fruits often remain on the branches well into autumn and winter, providing spectacular colour when many other trees are bare. The fruits are also popular with birds and can be used for making crab apple jelly.
Growing to approximately 4–6m tall with a spread of around 3–4m at maturity, it is an excellent ornamental tree for small and medium-sized Irish gardens.
Planting Guide
- Plant in full sun for the best flowering and fruiting.
- Will tolerate light partial shade.
- Prefers fertile, moist but well-drained soil.
- Suitable for clay, loam and sandy soils when drainage is adequate.
- Dig a planting hole approximately twice the width of the root ball.
- Plant at the same depth as the tree was previously growing.
- Avoid burying the root flare or graft union.
- Backfill with soil and firm gently.
- Water thoroughly immediately after planting.
- Stake newly planted trees where necessary, particularly in exposed locations.

- Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring if growing in poor soil.
