Parthenocissus quinquefolia (Virginia Creeper) – Single Cane – Care Guide

Parthenocissus quinquefolia, commonly known as Virginia Creeper, is a vigorous, fast-growing deciduous climber known for its spectacular autumn colour, strong growth, and ability to quickly cover walls, fences, pergolas, and large structures. Supplied as a single cane, it establishes quickly and begins to climb using small adhesive pads at the tips of its tendrils. This is one of the best climbers for large spaces, adding lush green cover in summer and fiery colour in autumn.

Planting & Position

• Light:

  • Thrives in full sun, partial shade, or even full shade.

  • Best autumn colour appears in full sun.

• Soil:

  • Adaptable to most soils as long as they are well-drained.

  • Tolerates clay, loam, sandy soils, and urban conditions.

  • Grows well in both acidic and alkaline soils.

• Site:

  • Ideal for covering walls, fences, sheds, pergolas, and unsightly structures.

  • Needs room to grow; Virginia Creeper is vigorous and can reach 10–15 metres at maturity.

• Planting depth:

  • Plant at the same depth as it was in the pot.

  • Space approximately 60–90 cm from other climbers.

Care & Maintenance

• Watering:

  • Water well after planting.

  • Keep soil moist during the first growing season.

  • Once established, Virginia Creeper is drought tolerant and needs little additional watering.

• Feeding:

  • Feed in spring with a balanced shrub or general fertiliser.

  • Excess feeding is unnecessary; this plant grows vigorously with minimal input.

• Pruning:

  • Prune to size in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.

  • Can also be trimmed in summer if it becomes too vigorous.

  • Suitable for hard pruning if needed; it will regrow strongly.

• Support:

  • Although it self-clings, provide a trellis or temporary support until established.

  • Avoid allowing stems to grow under roof tiles or into gutters.

• Maintenance notes:

  • This plant is vigorous and may need regular trimming in small gardens.

  • Not suitable for delicate structures or freshly painted surfaces.

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
