Passiflora caerulea ‘Purple Haze’ – Exotic Passionflower with Striking Blooms

The Passiflora caerulea ‘Purple Haze’ is a stunning climbing plant, admired for its exotic, large flowers and vigorous growth. This unique passionflower variety produces dramatic blooms with deep purple tones blending into violet and indigo, often accented by white or pale centres. The flowers are beautifully intricate, with the trademark filaments radiating out like a starburst, giving gardens an exotic and tropical feel.

Flowering from midsummer through autumn, ‘Purple Haze’ creates an unforgettable display on fences, trellises, or pergolas. Its glossy, lobed foliage provides a lush backdrop, while the flowers attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. In warm summers, it may even form small, egg-shaped orange fruits, adding another layer of seasonal interest. Hardy, vigorous, and easy to grow with the right support, this passionflower brings drama and beauty to gardens of all sizes.

General Information

Passiflora caerulea is one of the hardiest species of passionflower, and ‘Purple Haze’ is a vibrant cultivar bred for its colourful blooms.

  • Habit: Vigorous, twining climber with fast-growing stems.

  • Height & spread: Can reach 5–7m tall and wide with support.

  • Foliage: Glossy, lobed green leaves form a dense screen of foliage.

  • Flowers: Exotic star-shaped blooms with purple, violet, and indigo tones; intricate filaments and striking central detail.

  • Flowering season: July to October, with blooms lasting well into autumn.

  • Fruit: Small orange-yellow passion fruits may follow the flowers in warm conditions (ornamental, not widely eaten).

  • Position: Best in full sun for strong flowering; tolerates light shade.

  • Soil: Fertile, well-drained soil; prefers slightly acidic to neutral ground.

  • Hardiness: Hardy in much of the UK and Ireland, though young plants may need winter protection.

  • Uses: Perfect for training over fences, trellises, walls, arches, or pergolas to create an exotic focal point.

This variety’s vibrant colours and vigorous nature make it a striking choice for adding drama and height to gardens.

Care Guide

Passiflora caerulea ‘Purple Haze’ is relatively easy to grow, provided it has the right support and some protection in colder areas.

Planting

  • When to plant: Best in spring or early autumn when the soil is warm and workable.

  • Depth & spacing: Plant at the same depth as in the pot; allow 2–3m spacing if planting multiples.

  • Support: Needs strong structures like trellis, wires, or pergolas for climbing stems.

  • Preparation: Improve soil with compost to boost fertility before planting.

Watering & Feeding

  • Water regularly in the first year to help establish roots.

  • Once mature, it is moderately drought-tolerant but flowers best with consistent watering in summer.

  • Feed monthly in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser to encourage blooms and healthy growth.

Pruning & Maintenance

  • Prune in late winter or early spring to control size and encourage fresh growth.

  • Cut back old or overcrowded stems, leaving strong, healthy shoots to flower.

  • Tie in young stems as they grow to keep the plant neat and well-shaped.

Protection

  • Fully hardy in mild regions but may suffer damage in severe frost. Mulch around the base and protect roots in winter.

  • In colder areas, plant against a south- or west-facing wall for added warmth and shelter.

  • Generally pest- and disease-free, though aphids may occasionally affect new shoots.
