Phormium 'Platt's Black' – Planting & Care Guide
About Phormium 'Platt's Black'
Phormium 'Platt's Black', commonly known as New Zealand Flax 'Platt's Black', is a striking evergreen architectural perennial renowned for its dramatic, upright, sword-like foliage in rich shades of deep purple, bronze and near-black. Its bold colouring makes it one of the darkest Phormium varieties available, creating a stunning focal point in borders, containers and contemporary planting schemes.
Growing to approximately 1.2–1.8 metres tall with a spread of 1–1.5 metres, 'Platt's Black' forms a graceful clump of arching leaves that provide year-round structure and movement. Mature plants may produce tall flower spikes with tubular reddish flowers during summer, attracting bees and other pollinating insects.
Planting Guide
- Plant in full sun or partial shade.
- Full sun encourages the richest, darkest foliage colour.
- Prefers fertile, moist but well-drained soil.
- Suitable for loam, sandy and clay soils with good drainage.
- Improve heavy soils with compost and horticultural grit before planting.
- Dig a planting hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
- Position the crown level with the surrounding soil surface.
- Backfill with soil, firm gently and water thoroughly.
- Apply a mulch around the base to retain moisture, keeping it away from the crown.
- Space plants approximately 1–1.5 metres apart.
