Prunus serrulata 'Royal Burgundy' (½ Standard) – Planting & Care Guide
About Prunus serrulata 'Royal Burgundy'
Prunus serrulata 'Royal Burgundy', commonly known as the Royal Burgundy Flowering Cherry, is a stunning deciduous ornamental tree admired for its rich burgundy-purple foliage and masses of double, deep pink blossoms in spring. Similar in form to the popular 'Kanzan' cherry, this variety offers the added benefit of striking dark foliage that retains its colour throughout the growing season.
Supplied as a ½ Standard, it has a clear stem with a well-formed crown, making it ideal for smaller gardens, avenues and feature planting. Growing to approximately 6–8 metres tall with a spread of 4–6 metres, it develops into a broad, vase-shaped canopy that provides spectacular seasonal interest.
Planting Guide
- Plant in full sun for the best flowering and richest foliage colour.
- Prefers fertile, moist but well-drained soil.
- Suitable for loam, clay and sandy soils with good drainage.
- Dig a planting hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
- Position the tree with the top of the root ball level with the surrounding soil.
- Backfill with soil enriched with compost or well-rotted organic matter.
- Firm gently and water thoroughly.
- Apply a generous mulch around the base, keeping it clear of the trunk.
- Stake young trees securely until well established.
- Allow 4–6 metres of space for the canopy to develop.
Care & Maintenance
Prunus 'Royal Burgundy' is easy to establish and requires minimal maintenance.
- Water regularly during the first two growing seasons.
- Once established, water during prolonged dry spells.
- Feed each spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser.
- Refresh the mulch annually to conserve moisture and improve soil fertility.
- Keep the area around the base free from weeds and grass.
- Avoid prolonged waterlogging.
Pruning
Minimal pruning is required to maintain its elegant shape.
- Prune only if necessary during mid to late summer to reduce the risk of silver leaf disease.
- Remove dead, damaged or crossing branches.
- Lightly shape young trees if required.
- Avoid heavy pruning, as this may reduce flowering the following spring.
- Always use clean, sharp pruning tools.
