Quercus robur, commonly known as the English Oak, is one of the most iconic and long-lived trees in Europe. Valued for its majestic shape, deeply lobed green leaves, and acorn crops, it provides year-round beauty and a vital habitat for wildlife. Extremely hardy and adaptable, it’s ideal for large gardens, parks, and rural landscapes where it can reach its full potential and stand for generations.

Planting & Position

Choosing the right site is essential for this impressive tree to thrive over time.

• Light requirements:

  • Prefers full sun, where it grows strongest and forms a broad, well-shaped crown.

  • Tolerates light partial shade when young but matures best in open light.

• Shelter:

  • Naturally wind-resistant and suitable for exposed positions once established.

• Soil:

  • Adapts to most soils — loam, clay, or sandy — as long as they are moist but well-drained.

  • Thrives in neutral to slightly acidic pH but will tolerate mildly alkaline ground.

  • Avoid sites prone to prolonged waterlogging.

• Planting time:

  • Best planted in autumn or early spring while dormant and soil is workable.

  • Water the rootball well before planting.

• Spacing & size:

  • Allow 15–20 m or more from other trees and buildings; a mature oak can reach 20–30 m tall and wide.

  • Best suited to large gardens, fields, or parkland.

• Container note:

  • Young trees may be sold in pots, but plant into the ground as soon as possible for strong root development.

Care & Maintenance

Once established, Quercus robur is extremely tough and needs little care, but attention when young helps it thrive.

• Watering:

  • Water regularly during the first 2–3 years to help deep roots establish.

  • Mature oaks are drought-tolerant but appreciate occasional deep watering during prolonged heat.

• Feeding:

  • Usually unnecessary in fertile soils.

  • On poor ground, apply a balanced tree fertiliser or mulch in spring to boost growth.

• Mulching:

  • Apply a wide mulch circle of compost, bark, or leaf mould each spring to conserve moisture and reduce grass competition. Keep mulch away from the trunk.

• Pruning:

  • Minimal pruning is needed.

  • Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches in late winter while dormant.

  • Avoid heavy pruning; oaks dislike severe cutting back.

• Staking:

  • Stake young trees for the first 2–3 years in windy sites, removing supports once well anchored.

• Pests & diseases:

  • Generally robust.

  • May occasionally be affected by oak processionary moth, powdery mildew, or aphids, but mature trees cope well.

• Hardiness:

  • Fully hardy across the UK and Ireland; tolerates frost, wind, and pollution once established.

All standard deliveries will be completed within 5-7 working days via Fastway Couriers, any delay to this delivery time, the customer will be notified by One of our staff.

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.
 

Click & Collect

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
