Planting & Positioning

  • Ranunculus mix produces layers of delicate, rose-like blooms in a wide range of vibrant colours, making it ideal for borders, containers, and cutting gardens.

  • These plants grow from claw-shaped tubers that should be planted in autumn (mild climates) or early spring (colder areas) once the risk of severe frost has passed.

  • Choose a position in full sun for best flowering. In warmer areas, light afternoon shade can help prolong blooms.

  • Soil must be well-draining, as tubers are prone to rot in waterlogged conditions. If your soil is heavy, improve drainage with grit or horticultural sand.

  • Before planting, soak the tubers in room-temperature water for 3–4 hours. This rehydrates them and encourages quicker sprouting.

  • Plant tubers 5–7 cm deep with the clawed “legs” pointing downward.

  • Space them approximately 10–15 cm apart to allow for healthy air circulation and strong growth.

  • After planting, water lightly to settle the soil, avoiding oversaturation.

  • In colder regions, consider planting in pots that can be moved to a sheltered location during harsh frosts.

Ranunculus prefers fertile soil enriched with compost or well-rotted organic matter. A sheltered spot protected from strong winds will help support the tall stems and preserve the delicate blooms.

Watering, Feeding & Growing On

  • Water moderately after planting, keeping the soil slightly moist but never soggy.

  • Once shoots appear, maintain consistent moisture, especially during active growth and flowering.

  • Reduce watering if heavy rainfall occurs, as overly wet soil can cause tubers to rot.

  • Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser every 2–3 weeks once growth is established to encourage strong stems and abundant blooms.

  • Alternatively, incorporate a slow-release fertiliser into the soil at planting time.

  • Avoid high-nitrogen feeds, which may produce excessive foliage at the expense of flowers.

  • Mulching lightly around plants can help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.

  • In windy areas, provide discreet support to prevent stems from bending or snapping.

Ranunculus typically flowers in spring to early summer, depending on planting time. Each tuber can produce multiple stems, making them excellent value for colourful displays. Regular cutting for bouquets encourages further flowering and keeps plants productive. When harvesting blooms, cut stems early in the morning just as buds begin to soften and show colour for the longest vase life.

Aftercare, Lifting & Storage

  • Deadhead spent flowers regularly to prolong the flowering period and maintain a tidy appearance.

  • Once blooming has finished, allow the foliage to die back naturally. This process helps the tubers store energy for the following season.

  • Gradually reduce watering as leaves yellow and wither.

  • In mild climates with free-draining soil, tubers may be left in the ground year-round.

  • In colder or wetter regions, lift the tubers once the foliage has fully died back.

  • Gently dig them up, shake off excess soil, and allow them to dry in a cool, airy place for several days.

  • Store dried tubers in paper bags or trays filled with dry compost or vermiculite.

  • Keep stored tubers in a frost-free, dry location until replanting.

  • Check periodically for signs of mould or rot and discard any damaged tubers.

Ranunculus mix offers exceptional colour and elegance with relatively simple care. By ensuring excellent drainage, consistent moisture during growth, and proper aftercare once flowering ends, these tubers will reward you with an abundance of beautifully layered blooms season after season
