Rosa ‘Anne Boleyn’ – A Soft, Romantic English Rose with Graceful, Continuous Flowering
Rosa ‘Anne Boleyn’ is a beautifully refined English shrub rose from David Austin, celebrated for its soft colouring, delicate flower form, and generous blooming habit. Named after the iconic Tudor queen, this rose brings a gentle, romantic presence to any garden space. Its charm lies not in bold drama, but in its subtle, elegant beauty—making it perfect for gardeners who love refined pastel roses that blend naturally into borders, cottage gardens, and informal planting schemes.
The blooms of ‘Anne Boleyn’ are remarkably pretty. They appear in large clusters, each flower forming a shallow rosette filled with neatly arranged petals in shades of warm, blush pink. The flowers maintain a fresh, youthful look throughout their life, creating an uplifting and soft display. When the plant is in full flush, the effect is airy, graceful, and wonderfully abundant—almost cloud-like in the way the blooms gather together.
This rose is known for its light fragrance, offering a mild, fresh scent that complements its delicate appearance. While not as strongly scented as some varieties, the perfume adds a gentle sensory dimension without overwhelming nearby spaces. The flowers are produced freely and repeatedly, providing steady colour from early summer until the cooler autumn months.
Rosa ‘Anne Boleyn’ forms a tidy, rounded shrub, usually reaching around 1 metre tall. Its compact growth makes it especially suitable for smaller gardens, front-of-border positions, or mixed beds where reliable structure is needed. The plant is clothed in healthy mid-green foliage that contrasts beautifully with the soft blooms and remains clean throughout the season. For gardeners seeking low-maintenance roses, this variety stands out thanks to its good disease resistance and resilient nature.
This rose pairs effortlessly with a wide range of perennials. Lavender, nepeta, salvia, astrantia, and hardy geraniums all complement its soft colouring. It also shines when planted in repeating groups or used to create a gentle pastel palette across a border. Because of its neat habit and subtle elegance, ‘Anne Boleyn’ is often favored for more formal garden spaces as well as relaxed cottage-style planting.
