Planting and Positioning

Rosa Mix Climber Basic 100cm is a vibrant and vigorous climbing rose that offers a delightful mix of colours, perfect for adding vertical interest to walls, fences, arches, or trellises. For the best results, proper planting and positioning are essential.

  • Choose a Sunny Location: Plant in a position that receives at least 5 to 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. Morning sun is especially beneficial to dry off dew and reduce fungal diseases.

  • Support Structure: Ensure there is a strong support structure nearby such as a trellis, pergola, fence, or wall. These roses require training as they do not climb naturally like vines.

  • Soil Preparation: Roses prefer fertile, well-drained soil. Before planting, enrich the ground with well-rotted manure or compost to improve soil structure and nutrients.

  • Dig the Right Hole: Make a planting hole wide and deep enough to accommodate the roots comfortably, roughly 40cm wide and 30cm deep.

  • Planting Depth: Place the rose so that the graft union (the knobby area where the rose was grafted onto the rootstock) is just below soil level. Backfill with soil and firm in gently.

  • Water Well: After planting, water thoroughly to help the soil settle and eliminate air pockets around the roots.

  • Spacing: If planting more than one climber, allow at least 1.5 to 2 metres between plants to allow room for growth and good air circulation.

General Care and Maintenance

Rosa Mix Climber Basic 100cm is easy to manage with some simple but regular care. This includes watering, feeding, pruning, and general upkeep to keep the rose healthy and blooming throughout the season.

  • Watering: Keep the soil moist, especially during dry spells. Deep watering is better than frequent light watering. Aim to water at the base to avoid wetting the foliage.

  • Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch in spring around the base to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and improve soil fertility. Use well-rotted organic mulch or compost.

  • Feeding: Feed in early spring with a balanced rose fertilizer to encourage strong growth. A second feed in midsummer after the first flush of flowers can prolong blooming.

  • Deadheading: Remove faded flowers promptly to encourage repeat flowering. Cut back to a strong set of leaves or a healthy outward-facing bud.

  • Tying and Training: Gently tie new canes to the support structure using soft ties. Train them horizontally where possible to encourage more flower-bearing side shoots.

  • Pest and Disease Watch: Monitor regularly for pests like greenfly or aphids and treat with organic or chemical controls as needed. Watch for signs of black spot, mildew, and rust, and treat promptly with fungicide if required.

Pruning and Winter Care

Pruning is essential for encouraging healthy new growth, maintaining shape, and improving flowering performance. Winter preparation ensures the rose stays protected during colder months.

  • When to Prune: Prune in late winter or early spring (February or March), when the worst of the frost has passed and before new growth begins.

  • How to Prune: Remove dead, damaged, or diseased wood. Cut back lateral side shoots to 2-3 buds from the main framework. Shape the plant to encourage open, balanced growth.

  • Prune to Outward-Facing Buds: Make cuts just above outward-facing buds to encourage an open structure, which helps air circulation and reduces disease risk.

  • Remove Suckers: Watch for suckers emerging from below the graft and remove them at the base.

  • Winter Protection: In colder climates, apply a thick mulch layer at the base in autumn to insulate the roots. Protect young plants with garden fleece or windbreak if planted in exposed areas.

  • Container Plants: If grown in pots, ensure containers are frost-proof and consider moving them to a more sheltered position during winter.

Rosa Mix Climber Basic 100cm is a robust and colourful climber that rewards gardeners with a cascade of blooms in mixed hues throughout the summer. With the right care and attention, it becomes a stunning focal point that adds height, fragrance, and charm to any garden space. Ideal for training along fences, over arches, or up walls, it brings a dynamic splash of colour season after season.
