Planting & Position

  • Light:

    • Prefers full sun for best flowering and rich, warm colouring.

    • Tolerates partial shade, though with fewer blooms.

  • Soil:

    • Grows best in fertile, moist, well-drained soil enriched with compost or well-rotted manure.

    • Avoid heavy, waterlogged conditions.

    • Suitable for borders, rose beds, and trained supports.

  • Spacing:

    • As a shrub: allow 1.2–1.5 m between plants.

    • As a climber: plant 30–45 cm from its support.

  • Planting time:

    • Container-grown roses can be planted year-round.

    • Bareroot roses should be planted November to March.

Care & Maintenance

‘Strawberry Hill’ has excellent health and strong vigour with straightforward rose care.

  • Watering:

    • Water deeply after planting and continue regularly through the first season.

    • Once established, water deeply once a week during dry spells.

    • Keep foliage dry to minimise disease.

  • Feeding:

    • Feed in early spring with a specialist rose fertiliser.

    • Feed again in mid-summer to promote repeat flowering.

  • Mulching:

    • Mulch in spring with compost or well-rotted manure to conserve moisture and improve soil quality.

  • Pruning:

    • Shrub form (Feb–March):

      • Remove dead, weak, or crossing stems.

      • Reduce remaining stems by about one-third to shape the plant.

    • Climber form:

      • Tie main stems horizontally to create more flowering shoots.

      • Prune side shoots back to 2–4 buds in late winter.

  • Deadheading:

    • Remove spent blooms regularly to encourage continuous flowering.

  • Disease resistance:

    • Very good resistance to blackspot, mildew, and rust.

Seasonal Interest & Uses

  • Flowers:

    • Large, cupped, rosette-style blooms in warm pink with a glowing centre.

    • Repeat flowers from June to October, often in generous clusters.

  • Fragrance:

    • Strong, rich myrrh fragrance, one of its signature qualities.

  • Habit:

    • As a shrub: 1.2–1.5 m tall, rounded and bushy.

    • As a climber: up to 3 m with support.

  • Ideal uses:

    • Cottage gardens

    • Mixed borders and rose beds

    • Arches and obelisks

    • Feature shrub planting

    • Scented gardens

    • Pairing with lavender, nepeta, salvia, and airy perennials

  • Wildlife:

    • Attracts bees and beneficial pollinators.
