Planting & Position

  • Light:

    • Thrives in full sun, which enhances both colour and fragrance.

    • Will tolerate light partial shade but may flower less abundantly.

  • Soil:

    • Prefers moist, fertile, well-drained soil, enriched with compost or well-rotted manure.

    • Avoid heavy or waterlogged sites.

    • Suitable for mixed borders, rose beds, and feature plantings.

  • Spacing:

    • Allow 1.2–1.5 m between plants to accommodate its arching habit and ensure good air circulation.

  • Planting time:

    • Container-grown roses can be planted year-round.

    • Bareroot roses should be planted November to March.

Care & Maintenance

‘The Lady Gardener’ is a robust and reliable performer when given consistent but simple care.

  • Watering:

    • Water deeply after planting and regularly during the first growing season.

    • Once established, water weekly in dry periods.

    • Always water at the base to prevent disease.

  • Feeding:

    • Feed in early spring with a specialist rose fertiliser to promote strong growth.

    • Apply a second feed in mid-summer to support repeat flowering.

  • Mulching:

    • Mulch in spring using compost or well-rotted manure to enrich the soil and conserve moisture.

  • Pruning:

    • Prune in late winter or early spring (February–March).

    • Remove dead, damaged, or crowded stems.

    • Cut back remaining stems by about one-third to shape the plant and encourage fresh growth.

    • Deadhead regularly to prolong the flowering season.

  • Disease resistance:

    • Excellent resistance to blackspot, mildew, and rust.

    • Good spacing ensures optimum plant health.

Seasonal Interest & Uses

  • Flowers:

    • Large, deeply cupped blooms of glowing apricot, often with soft peachy or gold tones toward the centre.

    • Repeats from June to October in flushes.

    • Petals open into elegant rosettes.

  • Fragrance:

    • Strong, warm tea scent, one of its defining qualities.

  • Habit:

    • Graceful, arching shrub around 1.2–1.5 m tall and wide.

    • Can be trained informally along fences or low supports.
