Rudbeckia fulgida 'Little Goldstar' – Planting & Care Guide

About Rudbeckia fulgida 'Little Goldstar'

Rudbeckia fulgida 'Little Goldstar', commonly known as Black-eyed Susan, is a compact, award-winning perennial that produces masses of bright golden-yellow, daisy-like flowers with distinctive dark brown centres. Flowering from mid-summer through to autumn, it brings vibrant colour to borders and containers while providing an excellent source of nectar for bees and butterflies.

Growing to approximately 35–45cm tall with a spread of 40–50cm, 'Little Goldstar' has a naturally neat, rounded habit that requires little maintenance. Unlike taller Rudbeckias, its compact size makes it ideal for smaller gardens, front-of-border planting and patio containers, while still delivering an impressive display of long-lasting blooms.

Planting Guide

  • Plant in full sun for the best flowering performance.
  • Will tolerate light partial shade, although flowering may be reduced.
  • Prefers fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil.
  • Suitable for loam, clay and sandy soils if drainage is good.
  • Improve poor soils with compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting.
  • Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
  • Position the plant so the crown sits level with the surrounding soil.
  • Backfill with soil, firm gently and water thoroughly.
  • Apply a mulch around the base to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Space plants approximately 40–50cm apart.

Care & Maintenance

Rudbeckia 'Little Goldstar' is an easy-care perennial that performs reliably year after year.

  • Water regularly during the first growing season.
  • Once established, water during prolonged dry periods.
  • Feed in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser.
  • Water container-grown plants more frequently during warm weather.
  • Apply an organic mulch each spring to improve soil moisture and fertility.
  • Keep the area around the plant free from weeds.
  • Avoid prolonged waterlogging during winter.

Pruning

Minimal pruning is needed to keep plants healthy and flowering well.

  • Deadhead faded flowers to encourage continued blooming.
  • Leave some seed heads in autumn if desired, as they provide winter interest and may attract birds.
  • Cut stems back to ground level in late autumn or early spring.
  • Remove any damaged or dead growth as new shoots emerge.
  • Divide mature clumps every 3–4 years in spring or autumn to maintain vigour.
